I don't think we automatically get it. It will most likely be like all the other "free" upgrades where you have to contact them to get it and to agree to another 12 month contract.

You more than likely won't get that speed on wifi.

Yeah was thinking that but some people here have been getting close to 200, I went for the tp link c9 should arrive Thursday

I'm on the 240mbps package. I get about 60-70 over WiFi. Don't think there will be much point in upgrading because my speed is more than adequate for what I use.

Disagree, I can push over 200Mb on a 5Ghz .11N 300 AP with an AC client, fully expect to hit the 400Mb mark with an AC1750 MIMO unit in real world usage (while not at range).

Obviously, buying decent CPE and decent clients matter.

anyone know what the upload speed is? has that hit 36mb?

Edit: Found the answer: https://www.virginmedia.ie/broadband/learn-about-broadband/broadband-speed-test/ yup... 36mb up... now to make some calls.

    Yep: https://www.virginmedia.ie/broadband/learn-about-broadband/broadband-speed-test/

Price is €60 too, 15 euro more than 240mb. I expect a price increase soon though so might think about the upgrade.

there is no thinking for me... i need the upload speed, so more is better... going to give them a shout and see how quickly i can get upgraded...

Just upgraded over the phone there. Speed hasn't increased yet and my account page is still saying I'm on 240mb. Hopefully it will sort itself out soon :)

usually takes a few hours... reboot the modem and see what happens...what modem do you have?

360? Still regularly at less than 1.

Yup, new 12 month contract and an extra tenner a month.

My upload speed has increased by my download is pretty much the same. Ill test it again in a few hours:

Getting no where near that on 5Ghz with my AC2600, And cant bridge the Technicolour they gave me, so its just setup as access point currently.

Bill gone from €45 to €60 but getting more unlimited calls.

Pushed for the new router as use chromecast an tablet etc so anything that might improve the wifi I want

Also literally as he applied the upgrade I got cut off(rang off house phone), so very fast to turn on the new speed

How does one get more unlimited calls from the unlimited calls package you have right now ???

    60 Bills is robbery tbh.

I didn't have the mobile or international unlimited.

Not if 4 people are paying the bill, plus whats sky eir etc offering price and speed wise?

I dont know or care what they are offering. I have UPC i think 60 Euro is robbery. I think the calls are an add on that no body wants or needs.

    Eir 100 62 a month, didn't check calls etc

So over three times the speed for 2 less is robbery?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,147 ✭✭✭pm.

Tbh I think this is a bit of a con, unless you are hardwired in you are never going to achieve those speeds ( IMHO)

I'm going to call now if I get the speed increase as part of my current plan and have to sign up for 12 months well and good if not I don't think it's worth it for me

Eir is robbery too, whats your point.

Or do you think paying for unlimited calls when you dont use them whatsoever adds something to the mix.

Classic upselling nonsense. the only reason Virgin are rolling out 360 now is because Eir are rolling out 1Gb.

    Money for nothing.

If this doesn't require a new modem and can be done using the existing modems, then this is bad news!

The existing DOCSIS modems have only 8 channels with a total bandwidth of 400Mb/s, but that is shared with your neighbours!!!

So you are basically getting 360Mb/s of 400Mb/s shared bandwidth with your neighbours. Basically there is no way you would get 360Mb/s consistently with your neighbours also using their bandwidth. It might burst up to 360Mb/s from time to time, but it certainly isn't going to stay their consistently.

Unless you need the extra upload speed (and BTW that has the same contention issues), then I don't think it is worth speeding €15 to upgrade from 240Mb/s.

Also I'm very disappointed to see that they have increased the price of the 240Mb/s from €45 to €50!!

They are getting a little too expensive IMO. They really need a €40 level.

Re the price, looking back at my bills 12 months ago I see the 200mbit connection was €55 and then it went to €45 for 240mbit so it is still cheaper than it was.

It went from €55 to €44, then went to €45 including calls to mobiles, then it went to €45 including no mobile calls and now it has gone up to €50 with no mobile calls. So certainly not a good development.

Funny i remember the poor speeds of dial up and then those green router from eircom in 2000.

If you Told people you would get hundreds times faster they would be delighted.
Fast forward now we have the speeds we found something else to moan about.

    Can't please some people

    Thats complete nonsense.

You are telling people that are on 240MB today that paying an additional what is it 6-10 Euro per month for nothing is good !? (those that dont even want to move to a fake 360Mb speed)

    Complete utter crap.

Jesus sure Pints used to be tupence and people didnt have to have insurance on horses to get around .. you cant please some people.

This is a price gouge as usual and yearly from UPC Virgin there is nothing good in this for the customer.

    Depends on the user really.

As someone who has a wired connection and uses Steam and other heavy bandwidth services, saving 10 mins here and there when downloading a game is worth the extra money to me.

That's not really accurate. Your modem uses 8 channels of 8 Mhz bandwidth(Euro DOCSIS), at 55.62Mbit/s for each channel meaning current utilisation could easily be 440 Mbit/s without upgrades.

But you're assuming that each modem is assigned the same 8Mhz channels. DOCSIS3.0 uses 108 to 1.02Ghz down and 5 to 85Mhz up according to Cisco.

I'd be pretty sure even with the analog channels and TV services taking space, I'd be surprised if UPC didn't have around 100 downstream channels per cable run to share(circa 5Gbps) for data. You get the CMTS to randomise frequency assignment and the chances of frequent congestion are unlikely.

There IS an across the board increase in prices here without this 'new speed'

Are you a shill for Virgin Media or something?

There is nothing in this for customers even if you dont get the 360Mb,

And i am in no doubt that you are not getting full 360Mb down speed and what is the up speed btw ? since its so good, can you post us up a picture of this beautiful achievement, genuinely interested.

And does you mother not have all the unlimited calls on the old package. I do and have done for 2 years there is nothing new and delightful in it ...

jeffk was talking about the 240Mb/s, which went from a low of €44 including mobiles last year to now costing €50 for the same speed and no mobile calls.

Costs more and no extra speed and less calls, so overall much worse off.

I'm aware of all of that, but you are also making a lot of assumptions.

First of all, most of Virgins network isn't 1.02GHz, the Liberty Global corporate site says the network in Ireland is mostly 750Mhz.

So about 80 channels, take at least 35 channels off that for digital TV and analogue TV, you end up with about 45channels so 5 to 6 groups.

But then you have to talk about the node split. How many people are connected to the node?

Back in 2012 UPC was talking about 500 per node. Now hopefully that has improved significantly since 2012, but it is likely greater then 100, perhaps 250.

250 users per node, with 6 groups would give you a contention ratio of about 42:1, really not so great!

You're making assumptions yourself there, but a 42:1 ration isn't actually bad. The beauty of upping bandwidth at edge is that the chances of concurrent maximum downloading are reduced, as it takes less time to get the same amount of data reducing the odds of it happening. There are 1400 people on one of my sites who spend a fair portion of their day watching youtube and bandwidth usage really averages out at 300Mbps usually. I've no figures for ISP networks but I doubt a thousand houses use much past 360Mbps on average.

Oh I agree, the more bandwidth you have available, the more it can be averaged out over all users. While you maybe trying to max out your connection at 360Mb/s, the majority of your neighbours are probably just using a Mb or two browsing facebook.

However I do think this might be pushing things a little too far without more channels per modem. And if you look at the Talk To forum, you will already see multiple reports of people upgrading to 360Mb/s, with it initially bursting up, but quickly settling back down to around 270Mb/s.

To be honest, this feels more like a pure marketing move and I'm really not sure if it is worth an extra €15. But I think what really is pissing me off is the jump in the price in the 240Mb/s service.

To be honest, everything seems to have gotten a lot more expensive (broadband, TV, etc.) since UPC rebrand to Virgin Media.

No competition though in most aspects of their business. They can offer TV/Internet/Phone and upcoming mobile in areas where occasionally there might be a VDSL connection that will average out around 40Mbps from Eir, or a similar package with TV from Sky. It's one of the aspects of the National Plan that worries me, both in areas earmarked and areas supplied by UPC/Eir already.

If you read the thread you'd see I posted a speed test link

All you can do is knock stuff, virgin or Eir of nothing? Still waiting on your answer. Eir 2 dearer with 1/3 speeds, so why don't you knock them?

She didn't have unlimited mobile or international, thats why our bill and from 45 to 50 depending on usage. So 10 a month more between my brother and I won't break us

Ill have to go back and check but UPC were 8:1 I thought. Users per node shouldn't matter with HFC as long as there's less than 10 users on each port.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,258 ✭✭✭digiman

There was a time when I would have been on the phone to VM this morning and asking them to upgrade me. 240Mb/s is fast enough for me now, quicker upload would be nicer but I wouldn't be too bothered to pay for it I guess.

Looking at my macbook pro, it is connected to my Netgear R7000 at 1053Mbps. Just done a very quick test there with a speedtest running at 240Mbps or 30MB/s and also copying a file from a file on my network to my laptop at the same time and was hitting 50MB/s on average and peaked at 57MB/s. There was around 4-5 other devices connected to the wifi at the same time and I was sitting around 2m from the router. So I should be able to hit their 360Mb/s over wireless, now I want to get it just to try that!!
