Heading to both places in a few weeks. Have been to Zakopane before for a few days but didn't get a whole lot in as I went to the ski jumping World Cup. Heading back to see it again but wondering what's the must do's besides skiing. Is there anything worth while doing up the mountains before heading back to Kraków and seeing the salt mine and auschwitz.

Hi! Was in Kraków back in October and the salt mines are definitely worth a visit and auswitcz is very interesting but as I'm sure you can imagine it's not a very enjoyable experience. Make sure you plan some fun activities to uplift the mood afterwards. I'm heading to Zakopane skiing next week with a small group and wondering if you have any general tips? It's a first for all of us!

We're going in May so subscribing to this incase of any tips being mentioned.

Our current plan (it's 5 lads) is apart from Auschwitz and Salt Mines, is to just roam about the place and have the craic in random bars etc.

The 'Lost Souls' scare room / house is supposed to be good so we're going to do that for the craic.

If you're staying in a hostel, most of them do pub crawls on a nightly basis, we'll also be doing that :D

Just back from Zakopane (5 days), we did the salt mines and Krakow on our last day.

Excellent little break, not a huge amount of snow in Zakopane but enough for us beginners. We had a car which was handy for getting around and lugging ski gear, etc. Very busy resort, lots of traffic and Poles, some British and Irish. Witow had more snow and a chair lift up to the top of the mountain. Some great restaurants and bars in Zak, excellent value (4 of us ate out a few nights for 50 euro in total including drinks!). Salt mines are well worth a gander, bring your walking shoes.

Zakopane isn't far from Auschwitz, which is def worth a visit. Takes about a full day to get there, visit, and get back.

Take some time out and visit Morskie Oko, it's not a long trip from Zakopane. If you like that kinda thing there are plenty other walks/lakes to visit in and around that area of the Tatry mountains.

You can also catch a raft down the Dunajec river which borders Poland/Slovakia.

In Krakow itself the Wawel (Kings Palace) is worth a look:
