Complete noob question on satellite FTA setup

    Hi,

I'll be moving to a new house in the next few weeks and I'm looking to get FTA tv in place. The current owners have a sky box hooked up to their tv and a dish on the roof. I'm looking into a freesat box that will allow me to record and possibly have saorview too. From looking on here it seems that there'll need to be two connections from the dish for that setup.

Could someone let me know how I'd go about setting up one of those boxes?

    Thanks in advance.

you could go for an xtrend 8000 with 2 sat tuners + 1 dvb/c/t tuner.
i just use a saorview box for those channels with externally powered hdd.

sometimes new tvs have both tuners sat + saorview installed just needing hookup to dish and aerial.
2 feeds from sky dish for old sky + hd box to view + record so same as your twin sats tuner.

The Saorview will be an ariel connection, usually good enough to set this up in the attic, but it depends on your location.... it isnt a connection to the satellite. Check if your TV can accept Saorview, as this will get you out of the expense of a combi box ( Saorview, and FTAsat. I dont think you can get a FreeSat and Saorview Combi box)

To record you will need 2 connections to the Dish.

    Hope this helps.

The tv was bought in th North, so it's only got a Freeview tuner.

About the two connections to the dish, does that mean two cable from the dish running separately to the box, and would a Sky setup likely have those cab les ready to go? I''ve never used any satellite service so I really don't have a clue.

Just noticed this now. Looks like I should be able to plug in whatever box and be up and running with freesat and then get an Arial for the attic for Saorview.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

when sky do installs they can run shotgun=2 joined cables or 2 single cables side by side.
1 cable was used for viewing and other cable needed for recording.

more than likely your cables only need a receiver.

should have said with combos you view sat and record on saorview or record sat and look at saorview.

you cannot record saorview if wanting to watch saorview and recording sat cant view sat.

recording takes 1st place over viewing.

It might be capable of Saorview reception, no matter what the features list says: post the make & model here if you want more info.

Freesat is a brand name, not a generic term for free-to-air receivers. There are currently no Freesat combi satellite/terrestrial receivers, although the upcoming Saorview Connected box will reportedly use Freesat's smart TV guide tech., but no confirmation yet of integrated UK channels.

Eh, you can record at least one, & watch any other channel if you have enough tuners, something like the box you mentioned in your 1st reply, though you'd need a quad tuner if the TV can't get Saorview. A TV that also has a satellite tuner would be handy too, specially if it's paired with a basic single sat./single terr. combi.

i have enough tuners and boxes for different needs, the triax like most combos are sat and cable/terrestrial.

big boys xtrend 10000 running 4 tuners and 2 on sat.
my tv is saorview approved but crappy picture breakup from attic aerial needs checking.
all down to what one needs.

Between my wife and kid, the needs are:
    replacement for upc digital channels
    Irish channels, including rté junior
Only one remote (this is where the desire for a combination box comes in)
Decent epg (I think this is her most important requirement)
    Ability to record

    HD channels would be nice.

Doesn't seem to have the necessary video decoding ability for Saorview.

I'd wait & see what this new Saorview approved box turns out to be.

You're guaranteed HD anyway, but are there particular UPC channels you don't want to do without?
