Eir vs UPC for live sports

    I understand Eir uses IPTV, does this mean watching live sports will be a few seconds/large amount of seconds behind UPC or sky users?

    It would be annoying hearing neighbours cheer for a goal before you see it or getting a text from a friend before you see it.

    All TV services have lag * and the lag is different for different services.

    * Transmission, encoding/decoding, encryption/decryption, satellite upload, etc.

    I've no proof of this, but from pure logic, I'd expect Sky should be worst due to the relatively high latency of using satellites in space, versus Eir and UPC/Virgin where they are using most physical networks.

    It's only a second or two, does it really matter

    I've sometimes been listening to TodayFM on the normal radio and if there was something on that was interesting and i wanted to keep listening to it in my office, I'd fire up the app and stream it over my home wifi. There would be a fairly noticeable delay - probably 10 seconds or more.

    That could just indicate that TodayFM doesn't invest much in their encoding/streaming kit, but it'd be hard to tell. I don't know what the eir IPTV service is like, but if they are picking up some of their feeds from a satellite source, then there will already be the round trip delay to orbit before the stuff gets encoded.

    Comparing Satellite to Terrestrial broadcasts, before Saorview, I had an old TV on an aerial and Sky box in the other room both on RTE 1 and there was maybe a 1-2 second delay on the satellite.
