Nissan X Trail 2004 2.2DCI Rev Problem

    Hi all,

About to change the filthy fuel filter on 2004 Xtrail, 2.2 DCI Sport, and hope it makes a difference.
Are there any other thoughts on what could cause the following please?

Revs to anywhere between 2/3.5 smoothly then flat lines and sometimes starts jolting.

If driven steadily, then I can reach 70/80 mph, 120kmph + no problem but as soon as I go to give it a decent bit of juice she starts losing power.

When in neutral she will rev right to the top of the clock at 6,000.

She gives a tiny puff of black smoke when having this issue.

    V. High mileage - 190,000miles but well serviced all her life.

Starts perfectly etc, v good on fuel.

This seems like a fuel starvation issue to me but could it be an injector issue?
I know they are problematic on the 1.5 Renault engine and hoping it's not the same...!

Thanks for any thoughts, suggestions and advice.

    Happy New Year :)

A bad earth can cause that.

Saw it once on a diesel xtrail.

Can you give more details on this please. Particularly the location of the earth that gives trouble.
    Thanks

    Hi OP here.

    Thanks for advice.

Battery is fine and wires seem in good shape.

Removed fuel filter today and hoovered out its compartment. Went for a short drive and there was a vast improvement!
Still same problems but not as badly at all. Got her accelerating quickly and up to 4,000.

Then replaced fuel filter and car was extremely bad again.

Changing filter tomorrow once shop is open and using Dipetane to see if it assists.

Any other suggestions would be great!

    Thanks a mill :)

I have an xtrail reving slightly from start up. After I drive a bit it doesn't do it again when idle. So after a bit of research I seen that a cause can be an issue with the fuel pump. I can't remember exactly what it was but iirc it was something to do with a switch of sorts at the side of the pump which can become faulty. Replacing this solves the problem.

I'll try and find the info and I'll post the link. I haven't sorted mine yet as it is not too bad now. It may not be the issue you are having but it might be worth a shot.

OK so the brain woke up and remembered what it was. It was the suction control valve and below is a link showing how to replace

Hi yes I did read up about that. The suction control valves on the back of the high pressure pump, is what you mean?

Sorry, link isn't working for me, thanks a million for your help though.

I'm going to get on it asap, will need to source valves first.

    Cheers! :)

It is in the engine bay and it can apparently be got on eBay. So it might be worth checking the price.

I am confused, have you replaced the fuel filter or the airfilter?
It sounds to me like you cleaned the airfilter and housing, the fuel filter is not cleanable or hooverable.
If you haven't done so it would be advisable to replace the actual fuel filter with a new one and the airfiter at the same time.
Many diesel performance problems start with low fuel flow and a blocked fuel filter will certainly restrict flow.

Just an update, changed the fuel filter and an enormous difference. Driving perfectly at full throttle, right up the gauge, when I took it on a short drive.

Waiting for air filter to arrive.

Thank God, hopefully this will be the cure!

Great stuff, I recommend changing the fuel filter on diesels every 6 mths, prevention is better than cure and all that kind of thing.

Argh. Went for a longer drive and she went very well initially before losing power again.

No juddering just gradually slowing down regardless of selected gear or throttle use.

I turned off and waited a minute then she drove fine again (i took it easy, v. gradual acceleration) but some time later she got slower and slower.
On a steep incline I had to go to first gear and she crawled up and 1500revs.

This was all smooth however, no shuddering at all.

Could this be a 'limp mode' issue regarding the turbo/over boost system? (No idea what I'm really talking about...)

Cheers! Appreciate all the help :)
