Toyota Yaris advice

Sooooooooo based on this thread I decided to look for a 2nd hand 1ltr Yaris from a private owner, and there's a good few out there. Looking for a 2003-2004 Yaris. They all look ok, NCT ok, but they all have around 150,000-200,000 km on the clock.

I know it is all down to how the car was handled, driven and serviced, but would that mileage be considered ok?

Based on what I have read, the Yaris is an unstoppable machine.

    Cheers

200k is 120,000 miles over 10 years is 12000 miles a year, exactly average.
The Yaris is predominantly bullet proof but if you know little of cars have a mechanic look over it for you. It will be worth the 50 or so quid for the piece of mind.

Thats for sure, but that might not be easy done when you need to take it from a private owner. Garages might not be in the area and they might not have the time to check it instantly

Try to get one with yearly or 12k mile service history. The Sol model is the best spec with CD player and in some cases air con. Worst model is Terra that comes with black bumpers and no electric windows.

What are you prepared to spend?

Good to know, thanks, I was looking for uni colour bumpers anyways.

Luna also has body coloured bumpers and electric windows but generally no CD player.

I have a 00 model with black bumpers and electric windows so what one are you talking about?

    Right, thanks again. :)

Nice looking car with low mileage, probably could be had on budget with some haggling.

The strata models had more goodies than the sol. all post mid 03 will have CD player and abs. very few sol out there and practically none with Ac.
the one with no power steering or electric Windows was the short lived E model think it was gone by 01.
Terra has electric Windows, central locking, dual airbags and Half painted bumpers.
All models had colour codes bumpers from 03 facelift onwards. blue edition and strata are the ones to go for IMO

Yes looks like I'm wrong, it's actually electric mirrors that are not on that model.

A good gauge of how genuine the seller is if they are open to a mechanic checking it over. If the seller won't allow a 3rd party inspection walk away. Plenty of honest cars for sale so no point in rewarding scumbags.

BTW There are plenty of other 1l cars for sale in your price range and even if you get a Yaris with FSH and a mechanic check out it could still end up being a money pit. Just because a brand or model has a good reputation cars can still bang in a bad way. Check out other brands which are local, so your trusted mechanic can check it over, instead of travelling a long way to get a Yaris you can't get checked out easily.

Toyota Yaris is the only car we owned (wife) which increased in value after 2 years, they are a brilliant little car to hold their value, and this hurts as I'm personally a VW man.

that one in westmeah has had the front bumper resprayed. not unusual in a 10 year old car but worth saying.

Hmm I see, one image it looks same colour on the other it seems to be lighter and more blueish. Maybe a small accident, I will check that out.

There was another Yaris, with low mileage but had the clutch changed, not sure what to think of that. Dont trust it, have to fight the urge to go for that one.

That pre facelift 03LS one despite having a terra badge in the back is actually the higher spec Luna. New clutch wouldn't put me off tbh but I'd hold out for a facelft as they have ABS

it had a little prang on the front. you can see where the bumper was squashed against the bumper bar inside on the pass side.
it seems to have new headlights too which woukdht be unusual as they go opaque over time. bumper hanging off on driver side and pass side wing deformed from impact

The headlight in the last photo has been changed. It looks way cleaner and they didn't put the front bumper on properly on that side. You can see the clip on the headlight in which the bumper is supposed to sit.

Which site did you use to get that info?

What does that imply actually, sold to dealer?

Got traded into a garage. seller bought it trade. just means they are going to be well able to sell and answer your questions and won't actually know a whole pile about the car as they only just bought it to flip it.
    Poncke wrote: »

cos they're not really a garage and won't be giving a warranty or paying tax etc.
Quite common. not necessarily something to be afraid of, but handy to know

Maybe they want to mark it as a "trade sale", "sold as seen" in the hopes that they don't need to provide a warranty?

    Not sure...

Car was probably traded in at a main dealer but is too old to retail on their forecourt. Was probably sold on to a small time wheeler dealer looking to sell it on at a profit without putting any money into it.

There isn't really though. There really is very few 1.0 liters option out there in the op's budget, especially good options. The chances of a well minded yaris with a fsh ending up being a money pit is extremely slim tbh. Those yaris's are by far the best 1.0 in the op budget. A good one should provide years of hassle free motoring.

I noticed as well that the Westmeath Yaris has only done 1500 miles since it passed the NCT on 26th August . Seems a bit on the light side

Side story, work colleague knew a woman who was selling a 06 Sol (mark 2) with 140000 miles on it for €2k and the real sweetner was the engine had been replaced by Toyota and had only 20K miles on it. He was humming and hawing but eventually bought it for his son.

Son wrote it off a month later, bloody hell what a waste.

Wife has a 01 model, she been driving it for the last 7 years, mother in law gave it to her after she had it 3 years.

In that time i've serviced it, changing oil and filters etc, even replaced brake pads.

Water pump seized, luckily wasnt a big job to replace, if your handy with spanners, cost about €60 all in, took less than an hour too.

Its a basic A-B car, hand brake cables can then to stretch.

But its never broken down or failed to start, would highly recommend.

AA mechanic friend once told me "its one of the few cars he comes across not broken down on the side of the road" :)

Same here, we have a 00 with 80 on it, apart from a windscreen washer pump it's been A1 for the last 4 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Yeah, we have a 00 the last 4 or 5 years, when the mammy had it there was no hassle, just tyres and oil changes.

The sister has had it the last 2 years and she is the worst driver in the world but even at that its taking the abuse very very well. The only non serviceable items we've replaced were the rear brake lines and the water pump and none of those are really even her fault I suppose. Around 140k on it now and it's going strong.

A friend has a 03 and last time I seen it, it was heading for 270k miles and it was still going very well, he got it as a hand me down from his parents and he doesn't give a **** about it but it won't give in.
