Im on the second belt in a week and the belt, it starts of being noisy then I can see it slowly shredding on the inside and i can see it happening again now

I think the power steering pullys is ever so slighty out of line of the rest and looks like it leaning a tiny franction to the side, can this pulley be tightened or anm i looking at a new pump? If i am are they handy to replace? tks

    Sorry its a 1.8tddi transit connect 04

Check is the tensioner moving freely.

Also that pulley you say is out of line. Does it spin smoothly.

    Can be locking up intermittently

Im going to take the belt of tomorrow and free spin all the pulleys to check for noise/stiffness etc

I only noticed the pump pulley looked a little out of line although it may not be but ill double check it tomorrow, hopefully the pulley may just need tightened

Check to see if pulleys have rust on them. Not the easiest thing to rectify but have seen a new belt go to shyte in 5 mins with a rusty pulley.

With belt off check pulleys for play .
Have a close look at crankshaft pulley - if it has the outer part bonded to rubber the pulley part could be starting to come loose . And check the pulley itself isn't coming loose from the CS.

ok lads after a closer look today there is a bit of play in the steering pump pulley, the belt was actually leaning over the edge of it slightly, now i went to tighten the bolt holding on the pully and it seem there isnt one! either the bolt has come out or it requires a special socket i dont know

i had a look at a tddi focus they have the same engine and there is a strange looking bolt that holds the pulley on that but mine there appears to be none, also the pully on the van is sitting out quite a bit compared to the focus

Id take a pic but there is a bloody storm outside and its dark

Have you checked the number of grooves on each pulley ?
You could find that one pulley has one less than the others - and maybe the 'old' belt had the smaller number of ribs .
If one pulley has a groove less then this could cause problems (depending on how belt is fitted ) - maybe some pulley has been changed etc.

ok so it seems the play in the steering pump pulley is enough to just be pulling the belt sideways, so are these pumps serviceable? im assuming theres a bearing in it which has gone prob an easy enough fix but are these actual one serviceable, i can swop one from a tddi focus if they are a straigt swop does anyone know? tks

The pulley is not removable from the power steering pump on that engine. You will need to replace the whole power steering pump.

Looking at the OE part numbers, you cannot use the power steering pump from a Focus on a Transit Connect.

You can only use a power steering pump from a Transit Connect or a Tourneo Connect.
