Cracked Ignition Coils

So, car is running rough, engine light is on, but no reader.

In lieu of that, I said I'd have a look under the bonnet. Two of the four ignition coils at cracked, one appreciably so.

I've attached photos of both, and what I'm wondering is are they damaged enough to cause misfiring. I ran the engine with the most damaged one removed and didn't really notice any real difference in running, but the set up s such that I cannot remove them while the engine is running, so a little more difficult to notice

you shouldn't do that - the high voltage will try to go somewhere

there is / you can make a yoke for that craic if you want

    Thanks, appreciate the info.

Any idea re. those coils causing misfire

Be very surprised if they weren't causing a misfire.

Once the insulation brakes down they ark to ground or internally then they die quickly after that.

Visual, thank you very much. I appreciate the reply. I knew this to be the case with ht leads, but was a little unsure when it came to individual ignition coils.

    Thanks again

Yes if you remove the electrical connection to the suspect coils and it makes no difference to the sound or running/RPM of the engine, consider that coil to be faulty.

The coil you disconnected (with most damage) and it made no difference to engine running is 100% faulty. This you have proved.

The other coil with less visable damage is probably faulty or soon will be. You could repeat the same test and disconnect it. Turn off the engine disconnect and try restart. If it makes no difference it's dead also. If it does make a difference it is working to some degree but with insulation cracked I say it maybe intermittent or will die shortly

Just to wrap up the thread, two new ignition coils, engine running sweet as a nut.

Thanks for the replies, info and insight.
