Jaysus, 27% gone, and they're not even a day and a half into it... one broken leg, some broken ribs, and an awful lot of broken boats.

I'd have said that race was on my bucket list, but I'm rapidly going off the idea at the moment

That boat Black Jack doesnt seem to enjoy S2H much. She dropped her rig last year and retiring again this year. Shes a Volvo 70 aswell so well suited to this. Good to see Brindabellas still on the go even if shes retired. S2H is a defo bucket list race. Was down there in 2001 and was impossible to get on a boat. Memories of 1998 were still raw and owners were very cautious of taking a crew to Hobart even more so when one of them might be a 20yo foreigner

Comanche wins the race, over 50 nautical miles ahead of it's nearest rival.
First time since 1998 it's been won by an American owned boat, and first time ever it's been won by a female co-owner, who also crewed, and said that at times she felt "pure terror"

Also the first time a crew have retired, sailed back to Sydney, then restarted and won

Can I ask what makes the race so significant? Is it the constant difficult conditions/tides? Or what?

If the winds from the south its usually blowing stink big seas and miserable. Theres also the crossing of bass straight where seas can be a mess as its exposed and open to the west. The finish is up a river which can be very tactical especially if its light weather and adds to the drama if 2 boats are close or the record is under threat. The race has always got a good turn out of maxis and big boats aswell which adds to drama. And with nothing major sailingwise at that time of year it gets an interest from sailors around the world.
