Have you had Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoiled on you?

I had been diligently avoiding any Star Wars related media for the past week or so, as I knew I wasn't going to get the chance to see The Force Awakens for a few days. Last Saturday, however, I was listening to a podcast I used to enjoy (but from which I have promptly unsubscribed) called Screen Junkies Movie Fights, in which three panellists argue various questions about films (e.g. What is Nicholas Cage's best film?).

Mere minutes into the podcast, after the group had chastised those who would ruin the new Star Wars film, the absolutely cretinous John Rocha revealed the biggest plot point of The Force Awakens (which I won't reveal here).

I immediately switched off the podcast, and hoped he had been deliberately misleading listeners (which, in itself, is also a kind of spoiler).

However, having finally seen the film, my fears were confirmed true.

I am wondering if anyone else had The Force Awakens spoiled on them and if it detracted much from their enjoyment of the film?

I'd be lying if I said it hadn't detracted from my enjoyment of it, I'm afraid.

    F**k you, John Rocha.

Someone at the darts last night spoiled most of it in one line, on those cards they hold up, I hate people who do this

No. I saw it on Friday morning. I didn't hear any spoilers beforehand, I haven't heard any since either.

Spoiled the end of the Darts? :)

I saw it today and new nothing about it beforehand apart from
The Skelligs appearing in a part of the film
    .

I just avoided any film reviews or anything to do with the film before hand and didn't go near anything on the internet related to it.

It does annoy me when films are spoiled on unrelated topics on the internet which has happened quiet frequently on this forum in my experience.

One of the lads in the office was in Dundrum getting some popcorn before going in to see Force Awakens and some scumbag on his way out of the cinema shouted out the spoiler at the top of his voice.

Where's Jihadi John when you need him?

I hope he was given a life time ban from that cinema!

I had it spoiled from comments on completely unrelated posts on Facebook. I think it's an incredibly crappy thing to do, especially given how much Star Wars means to some people. I find that it tends to come from people who aren't even old enough to remember the first 6 movies, and think they're being funny.

Now I just report spoilers when I see them.

A little bit - when reading an article completely unrelated to Star Wars, a linkbait with a spoilerish title said
a character was going to die but not which one
    so that was annoying.

Yes, some arsehole on another website's message board (in a spoiler free thread too) outright said that
    Ren kills Han Solo

But on the plus side I'm a moderator over there so I banned him. :P

I don't understand how so many people are so ignorant when it comes to spoiling things like movies and shows. Fuking hell I used to be so annoyed at how stupid, oblivious and inconsiderate morons were when Breaking Bad was going and some of them are still as bad with GoT.

"Oh my God, did you see the new episode of Breaking Bad? I can't believe 'so and so' happened" without even pausing after they asked if you had seen it. You have to be a bit retarded to not consider these things when discussing movies and shows

That's such a rude thing to do.
Me, my brother and my girlfriend saw the movie last Saturday night and afterwards we all went somewhere to eat. I was very cautious about talking about certain aspects because people were in ear-shot. It's just the decent thing to do.

Am so glad I saw it when I did. Me and the bro had the same mentality - the longer we wait to see it, it will get spoiled for us. But JJ Abrams and Disney should be credited for how much they didn't reveal of the movie (Sadly not a trend in Hollywood with trailers these days)

Had it spoiled within about five hours of it releasing when I accidentally glanced at a YouTube comment section, it was the only comment I saw too.

Once I started watching the film it didn't take away from it at all though, I watched Empire knowing the big reveal and it's still my favourite movie sure.

Was waiting outside of the cinema, some kid came out of the latest screening and said
wow everyone clapped when Luke appeared at the end
I wanted to punch him, his father, his mother, his family and everyone who he knows, knew and ever will know in the face. Nah not really, but

and thus that wouldn't be a spoiler

    Sure but
no one knew where he was, at the beginning you had hints given that Ren might be Luke that had fallen to the Dark Side and followed his father
the boy gave a bit away of that as
I doubt that they would have clapped if he had fallen to the dark side

I've been very fortunate that I didn't take any precautions about staying off the internet; whenever I saw the words "Star Wars" I scrolled down. Didn't see it til Sunday night and didn't have it spoiled. I've never seen such a push by the internet to avoid spoilers. It's amazing.

From the reviews I've read, they have talked about the special effects and directing, nothing positive has been said about the plot so I wouldn't let that spoil it for you. The reviews have been positive so if you like light swords and Harrison Ford bantering with a wookie, then you're in for a treat.

From listening to Star Wars fans talk about the franchise, it hasn't been about plot lines for quite a while.

Was hit by this exact same spoiler. What an idiot. At the start of the episode they are saying a million & one times, no star wars spoilers, etc...

Then the fool has to open his mouth. OK, he doesn't say the exact words of what happened, but you'd have to be fairly slow not to pick up what was going to happen, even if you don't know the precise circumstances.

I didn't let the missus know anything, so she didn't see it coming. At least I got to bask in some of her reflected shock

I went to see it Friday so didn't have to wait too long to avoid spoilers, and managed to go in having seen the original teaser and one trailer. And warned my son on Monday not to spoil it for any kids in his class who hadn't seen it.

It Is easy enough to avoid the podcast and online spoilers even if you have to resort to staying offline until you have seen it. In the main thread there were posters who were talking about how they would be pissed if anyone spoiled it on them yet the same posters were scouring the internet for every bit of news about the movie, not really the best strategy for avoiding spoilers.

The mentality of deliberately spoiling it for others is just something I can't get my head around. Overhearing an excited kid coming out of the screening is one thing but someone deliberately coming out and saying it is inexcusable. My OH showed me an article the other day about players on Battlefront having the spoiler in their gamer id....what could you possibly get out of it?

And ironically I think that's feeding the trolls...

Before I say what I'm going to say, let me be clear: it's nice to see a film blind. People who purposely spoil a film/TV show are being assholes. If there is a significant plot detail revealed, it's the right thing to do to warn readers/viewers about it. And there's nothing wrong with taking reasonable precautions to avoid spoilers.

But, at the same time, I think 'spoiler paranoia' has reached hysteria levels at this stage. I've seen people online who almost seem to read reviews of films or watch trailers seemingly as an excuse to get outraged about 'spoilers', however minor they are (there's only so surprising a Hollywood superhero blockbuster is going to be after all :pac:). I think it's significantly holding critics in particular back from doing their job, so cautious are they to avoid the spoiler mob - which is very much a thing - when writing up their reviews at the risk of the more thorough analysis a more in-depth discussion of the film allows (especially since many writers only have one chance to write about a film before the next dozen arrive). I'd much rather somebody write a full, detailed review rather than vague ones that try to skirt around issues of note - so many of our best critics are tied up writing release day reviews that lack thoroughness. A quick 'spoiler warning' does the job.

There are much, much worse things than a spoiler - especially since there's really only ever a small amount of 'surprise' plot developments that can actually happen (in Game of Thrones, for example, they only really have 'somebody dies' as their trump card). As nice as it is to see a film with a minimum of information, it's equally lovely to watch a film with a general knowledge of what happens and appreciate how the film is structured and crafted around it (it's why we rewatch films). We live in a world where people react instantly to media, and really I've come to accept that there's some I simply won't be able to keep up with, and I can't stop the internet from doing its thing at my pace. The literal details of the plot ultimately, IMO anyway, have less staying power than the form of the film and the effectiveness of the complete thing. And if a film well and truly relies on the element of a shock twist to truly work - ala The Sixth Sense - then odds are it might not even be a very good film in the first place.

I guess what I'm saying is that while I fully understand the urge to avoid spoilers and would heavily discourage , I think the sheer fervour and almost fanaticism against spoilers is, in a sense, making the idea of a spoiler far more extreme than they actually are. Decent, reasonable practice should prevail, but the more extreme the distaste for spoilers, the more trolls are going to revel in the spoiling.

i avoid spoilers / Trailers for anything i really enjoy
i stopped watching trailers for comedies years ago
i stopped reading casting notices for shows i really enjoy especially ones like Thrones or the Expanse that are based on books and even the mention of a new actor playing X role which will have in impact on X character - that **** gets my mind spinning for weeks/months on end.

Best just to stay away and enjoy it for what it is
Ive often wondered if people who create great works of film or TV ever wonder what it would be like to experience thier own creation blind, something they can never do....

    How The SpoilerFree Device Works

Simply place the neural harness on your head and adjust the straps until it is comfortably snug and the electrode pads are as close as possible to your scalp; for maximum effectiveness, please shave your head. If we meet our first stretch goal, you will also have the option of applying our special conductive gel to the electrode pads.

Next, press the green button on the control pad or your Bluetooth-enabled mobile device running our SpoilerFree app. Now, think of the thing that you want to forget—really picture it, the outrage and indignation, and the smug arrogance of the person who ruined everything. Now press the red button and keep trying to remember the spoiler. When the device has scrubbed all traces of that enjoyment-sapping experience from your head, it will play a pleasant chime.

And that’s it. It’s really that simple. Our prototype has been thoroughly tested and safeguards in our application’s software will ensure that you don’t forget anything important like your spouse’s name or the smell of lavender.

I remained spoiler free. I didn't get to it until Saturday and I self imposed a Twitter ban from Wednesday until after the film. I was just cautious of where I visited on the web apart from that.
I think that anybody who was deliberately spoilering are just trolls. It's a way that they know would annoy lots of people and it would be easy to do.

Same here. Could be a kitten gif thread or something and someone posts in the comments, " that's nearly as bad as x and y and z that happens in the The Force Awakens.

That said, it's not so much that anything was spoiled for me, more that all my theories were confirmed.

Yup, at about 1800PST last Wednesday, which was something like 24 hours before I could see it anywhere even if I had booked in advance, one dude posted "
RIP Han Solo, can't believe his son killed him
" on Facebook and couldn't understand why people were annoyed.

Honestly though, none of it seemed as if it were positioned to be hugely surprising so it didn't bother me at all.

Before seeing the movie I read spoilers and spoiler reviews. For me that has no detrimental effect. A movie isn't its story but how it goes about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,565 ✭✭✭K.Flyer

To be honest, I watched whatever trailers came up, read whatever articles I came across, including all the spoilers tagged or not, went to the movie and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
For me it was a joy to watch as it reminded me of queuing up in 1977 to see A New Hope and as a child being totally mesmerised by the whole experience.
    Edit
In saying that, I wouldn't spoil it for anyone else, even if they asked me and I knew the answer.

I haven't seen the film yet - no rush to. I think I've been mildly spoiled by the info that trickled out before release, but have had no trouble so far avoiding major spoilers - I think. It sounds like Facebook has been a major spoiler source, and I'm not on there at all.

I managed to see it without it being spoiled, but with that said, and knowing the obvious spoiler someome could throw out, I don't see how it would spoil the movie.
I think the spoiler itself was well telegraphed in the movie, and obvious it was going to happen, nor does it ruin the film. It's not like walking into usual suspects knowing
    who kaiser soyze is
. Its a plot twist, sure, but it doesn't ruin the film.

I was only thinking there that the mods on any kind of message board would be totally screwed when these kinds of things come up.

Would you not try and take it in turns - the ones who care the most take time off until you can see the film if you really care about it?

I for one completely stopped looking at Youtube, reddit and even google searches were meticulously planned beforehand lest I accidentally look for the wrong thing.

Thankfully I managed to last until the 23rd without anything going wrong but everyone in my office at work had it spoiled one way or another.

I'm not sure what effect spoiling it would've had but Star Wars is a big deal to me and a lot of people, and I'm happy I got to experience it fresh (not to rub it in or anything :o).
