Aer Lingus "Extra" Flights

    At the website http://www.thelingussource.com/ there are a whole lot of entries similar to this:

    Aer Lingus A320 EI-DEJ operated an additional Dublin – London Gatwick rotation this evening as EI2242/EI2243.

    Could someone explain what all these "extra" flights are. If they were already scheduled flights that people had booked on they wouldn't be reported. So, how do people know that these extra flights are going and be able to book them?

    Or am I missing something? :)

    They are additions to the regular schedule to meet the demand for travel over Christmas time. They are scheduled and have passengers booked on them. But their flight numbers are different with 4 digits. They'll only operate for a few days into the new year.

    There's lots of extra flights for Xmas, above explains it will. There can also be extra flight for different events, eg Soccer/Rugby matches, all sort of things. Any mainline Aer Lingus extra flight has the prefix of EI2xxx. Eg there's an extra SNN-LHR this evening and its EI2384, and the regular flights are EI380/2/6
