I had the weanlings and stores on a ration. I changed today to barley mixed with soya but cattle weren't that fond of it and weren't inclined to eat it

    Any solutions,

    Add some molasses or salt?

You would have been better off if you reduced the amount of ration while at the same time adding barley to make up the mix. Keep reducing the ration until they are on full barley/soya mix.
It is never a good idea to suddenly change diet, gradual is best if you want to keep them grubbing up.

As above. Mix a bit of ration with it and reduce it over a few days.

2 or 3 days and they'll be eating it just fine. They're just sulking.

Agree, tell them about all the cattle that are starving abroad in Africa and how they would be damn glad of a bit of barley !

When feeding cattle we would always order a new supply of feed 2 weeks before the old supply ran out. That way when the new supply arrived we could mix some of the new feed in with the older feed and the cattle didn't know the difference and wouldn't fall back.
    * The cattle knew the new batch of meal and sniffed their noses to it.

Just throw the ration over the mix and reduce it until they are eating the mix on its own. No need to be mixing ration with the home made mix.
