Any recommendations/experiences on any of the following estates?
I’m thinking about buying new in 2016.

    Skoda Octavia 2.0TDI (150bhp) Style
    Mazda6 2.2D (150bhp) Exec SE
    Hyundai i40 1.7D (136bhp) Exec Plus

    Any advise welcome!

    Thanks.

Are you going to award lying VW with another sale? It's in their corporate culture - who knows if they cheated on safety too?

You could always nip down to your local Cop shop and get a full review of the i40 :)

    - No experience of any of these cars, recently made the decision to go with a Hyundai i30 after many years of owning a Toyota. Like the 5-year warranty, value (because of current scrappage deal), design, specs. VW & Mazda only offer 3 year warranties, not sure if you care about that or not.

    - For the models you list the look of the Mazda is very striking, but I think Mazda prices are expensive and overall sales are niche compared to the other two marques. Recent negative comments in other threads here about their diesel engines, I don't know enough to say whether they are valid or not. A friend of mine has a Mazda 3 (151) with the same 2.2D engine, has never had a day of trouble and loves the car.

    - I can understand the earlier comments about VW, who's to say all the other manufacturers aren't cheating either? At this point VW are under so much scrutiny, would that not keep them straight?

    - Good luck with your choice, hopefully drivers of these models will offer some perspective in due course

NCAP do the safety tests, I know I'd prefer to be in a VW in an accident over a lot of other car makes.

I've driven the Skoda and the i40, they're not in the same league. The i40 was uncomfortable on a long run, it felt "vague" to drive, not a drivers car, the "leather" seats felt like polythene sheets, with little support. The Skoda was predictably steady and firm on the road, seats firm and supportive, felt well made. Over those two the Skoda would win for me.

There is no hope for mankind anymore.

Haven't driven any of them, but being inside them all. I would discount the Hyundai immediately, not in the same league as regards quality - 5 year warranty or not. I also believe it's more expensive to service than the Skoda for example.

Doesn't the i40 come with 5 years free servicing?

Would the Honda civic tourer be too small for you? Extremely frugal engine with nice power ratio

    Thanks.

I have one of the last of the previous model of mazda 6, top spec with the 2.2 diesel. Cracking car. Over 60k km on it in 2 years. No problems, and generally very happy.

My brother bought the new i40 within two months of me getting mine, he seems happy with his too. We did a bit of a feature comparison and both cars had things the other didn't.

Because I do reasonable mileage and he doesn't it would be hard to judge on going costs.

Depends what most important to you- the Mazda is the biggest and best looking but its a fair bit more expensive than the Octavia, the I40 is tarted up with a lot of extras like fake looking leather if thats your thing. If you want a massive boot the Octavia is one to go for and the 2.0 is nicely powerful for the money.

What are you looking for out of the car?

Looking for something comfortable on a long run and practical when it needs to be for the family. Also want something with reasonable power so looking at higher powered options in all (2.0 TD)

I’ve included the Skoda Superb on my list – it’s now actually my first preference!

I’ll take a look at a Mondeo in the New Year. Thanks.

Superb is a savage bus, drove a 170BHP estate last year, absolutely loved it, price tag was too rich for my pockets though.. We got a Mondeo Saloon, really nice car, but not as nice as the Superb.

What about something different? It's still VAG, but they look exceptionally well in the flesh, especially in the fr. They are one of few estates I like.

I know it's smaller then the likes of a mondeo, but it would be fairly on par with the octavia in terms of size.

It's certainly nicer looking than the Skoda's! What's with the Seat's? They're attractive looking cars but just not that popular?

They didn't invest in removing the old stigma with then as much as they did with Skoda. Wouldn't be a patch on the new superb but against the Octavia mentioned it's every bit as good.

The most successful motoring marketing campaign ever (in Ireland in my opinion). Unbelievable, from behind the Czech curtain to millions of driveways in Ireland. They were akin to Lada at one stage!
