    Folks

Getting a strange noise from my engine, clip as follows,

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hf2scIuAAC8

Sounds like a scrapping hollow noise regardless whether cold or hot

Car is a 2011 VW passat 1.6L petrol, just purchased a few months . I had a diesel for years before that, which I understand sounds completely different.

Let me know what you think

Dunno if your car has a timing belt or chain... sounds a bit like a worn chain... have you much mileage on the car & is oil level ok?? if engine has had frequent regular oil change should be no issue with chain... but???

Actually the oil level is quite low, not below the minumum though. Ill try top her up.

I puchased it second from MSL only a few months ago - about 20,000 miles on her

20,000 miles (or nearest KM... still thinking in old money!) is very little would not expect cam chain issues (or any issues for that matter) at that mileage.... keep oil level up & frequent oil change you should have no issues for years.... hard to tell noise from UTube clip but if in doubt get car checked out from good mechanic/dealer....

    Thanks

Is 5W40 fully synthetic the correct oil to use?

    This is the car;

    2011 Volkswagen Passat CL 1.4tsi BMT M6F 122HP 4DR

5W40 fully synthetic oil would be correct. To check for sure, look in the lubricants section of handbook and look for the VW specification and match that up with a gallon bought at your local motor factors.

The correct oil for your car is 5w30 meeting VW 504.00 spec.

That sounds awfully like the chain is getting loose. A quick Google of the issue brings up that this seems to be a known issue which can result in total engine damage.

Also youtubeing of the noise seems to be nearly identical to yours so if I were you I'd be heading to the nearest VW dealer for a checkup and possibly ask them to foot the bill. Of course, the car will more than likely need a FSH.

Cool thanks, I only bought her from MSL in September, so will drop it back tomorrow. Dont like the idea of total engine damage

Good luck hope no issue but as others have said better get it checked out & be sure... expensive if cam chain breaks or skips tooth!...

Jesus man dont drive it! I'm not sure you realise what can happen If the chain snaps especially if going motorway speeds. Take the bus or something until its fixed.

Honestly, everytime you turn on that car you are risking the chain failing.
It's for sure the chain that is causing that noise. At the end of the day it's your car and money but I wouldn't turn it on at all until a garage gets their hands on it.

Sounds like a timing chain alright. Enough engine oil and regular oil changes are key to making sure that the timing chain lasts.

EDIT: Seems like there was a thread about chain issues on the 1.4 TSI before: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056962282

    Well lads.

I haven't used my car but checked engine this morning. Visual inspection. And water coolant level right down below minimum. She was right at max line only a few weeks ago.

So guess that could be the problem? Water pump gone?

Quite possible the water pump has packed in and the seal is gone leaking out the coolant and causing a racket.

You need professional advice from a mechanic though. We can only sit and guess here.

Do you see a pool of water under the engine? If no then fill it up again and stick some newspaper under the engine and check again in a few hours if there is a leak.
If no leak then open the oil filler cap and see if there is a mayo type colour there as well.

You mentioned earlier the oil level was low, did you top it up?

Make sure you have it topped up correctly before bringing it back to the dealer otherwise they will lay the blame firmly at your door for letting the oil level drop (regardless of how recently you bought the car or how little miles are on the engine, it is up to you to ensure oil water/coolant levels are kept in check)

When was the car last serviced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,116 ✭✭✭bazermc

Well car is Defo leaking as oily substance in the rain water puddle under the car.

I bought the car second hand from MSL in September 2015. So I am guessing it was full serviced.

I have the oil topped up to the correct level.

I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow.
