CCTV Privacy issue

Just wanted to get opinion on this.
Basically, I was working in an office yesterday (I do a little IT now and again ) and I discovered that the cctv in use in this office (the staff know it's there and are fine with it) is also recording audio (this they do not know).
Every conversation in this office is being recorded and stored.
Do the staff have a right to know about this and is their boss breaching any laws regarding privacy?

As above poster said. On the one hand, work T&Cs can include broad provisions about monitoring but on the other there has been employment case law that stays this has to be clearly known to workers and there is a reasonable expectation of privacy where it is not disproportate, eg private phone calls.

It's just a small local business, in this office there would usually be 2 staff, sometimes 3, just answering phones and arranging work for the other employees.

I could imagine that staff would have to be told about audio ,there are fairly strict guidelines on the use of cctv and staff have to be aware of where cameras are...covert cameras are not allowed,so I doubt people's private conversations being recorded is legal...op how are you aware of audio being recorded, very few Standard cctv systems would be capable of recording audio...it would definitely need to be in the staffs contract and in the company's handbook ...

Yesterday I had access to the cctv system for network issues.
I'm familiar with most cctv setups.
The guy also asked me to check a couple of his dome cameras, that's when I discovered they were the audio recording type.
Recording audio was also enabled on his dvr.

Defo would need additional microphones to get anything decent ,as you said maybe it was enabled by default ,might be an idea to say it to him in case he is unaware its enabled...he won't be able to use any recording for any purpose anyway as staff are unaware of it,plus it could land him in hot water.
Even for normal cctv in a work place it was to be justified and has to be used for security purposes.
