    Hi all,
I've got an Evinrude 8hp 2 stroke long shaft outboard. My boat would be far better suited to an 8 to 10hp short shaft motor.
I know I can go on and advertise for a swap on Adverts with cash going either way if necessary but I'm a bit nervous that I could give away my reliable (if semi-unsuitable) outboard and receive a lemon in return.
Does anybody have any good advice for me on how I could go about getting a suitable motor while ensuring I can end up with a similarly reliable engine without having to throw lots of money at it too?

    Thanks in advance.

If you know your engine is good it would be worth your while looking for a short shaft leg and just swap them over then hang on to the long shaft incase you change your boat, Better the devil you know :) Even if you got a good running engine there is no telling how long it will last and you might feel hard done by if it broke down a few weeks later.

This looks like one might be worth a call http://www.adverts.ie/parts-accessories/gear-box-for-evinrude-6-hp/7786418 I think you can use any evinrude, johnson, omc from 5hp up to 10hp.

That's exactly how I feel Fergal... If my current motor gave up I would take it on the chin but I would be kicking myself if I swapped with someone and that engine gave up!
I saw things online about swapping parts but I got the idea that short to long was a lot easier than long to short. I would be more interested in that than swapping engines. Thanks!

Anymore help or advice is welcome.

Hi there, please post the serial number, I'll tell u what parts do u need to convert it. U can also shorten the drive shaft (machine workshop), water tube and gear shifting rod less the lenght of "extension biscuit". When u do that, just remove the ext. buiscit and put all the rest togheter (not applicable to some models!). If u need any advice about the outboards, please call me from 10am to 10pm: *PM sent* Regards.

Hey! That sounds tempting and terrifying in equal measures!
The model is BE8RLESR. Serial is B2445744. Have you ever done this yourself before? Is it something you do in return for beer and/or cash?

    So the model number means...
Belgium, Evinrude, 8hp, rope start, 20" long shaft, made in 1990.
