Luposan (again)

I'm sorry for bringing this up again. I think its been mentioned a few times before so I'll understand if a mod wants to merge/delete this.

My parents cocker spaniel is around 14 years old. He suffers with his shoulders and his back legs. They shake non stop all day long and he finds it relatively hard to settle and get comfortable. He is stiff and obviously in some amount of pain. The vet has him on a tablet which I believe may be called candyl. Its not obvious that this is helping when he takes it, in that there's no ease in the shaking or stiffness but if we run out he's definitely more sensitive to touch etc so it must be doing something for him.

I'd just like to give him greater ease if possible, so I'm wondering about this luposan that I recall being mentioned here a few times. So...

    What exactly is it?
Why do people recommend the pellets rather than other forms?
Do you think it would help him?
Can it be taken with tablets like the candyl? He also has to take an antibiotic everyday for something else that can't be operated on because he has a bad heart. Would that affect taking the luposan?

Just to say as well that despite all this he is a very happy dog and still has a great quality of life. He doesn't let it hold him back and loves short walks and a run around the garden. I just really want to help my parents improve his quality of life and whatever time he has left.

    Hi there,

I use Luposan and have done for the past 3/4 years - i have a 10 1/2 year old cocker. He has bad joints due to alot of running we did he was younger

I find it excellent, now i do use it in conjunction with salmon oil... both of which i get from zooplus.ie

    What exactly is it?

    LUPOSAN GelenkKraft Konzentrat Pellets

    Composition
30% green-lipped mussel extract, ground seaweed, 10% wild salmon meal, malt extract, 7% grape seed concentrate, dried
nettles, dried dandelion, 5% acerola cherry extract, dried
    horsetail, 2% evening primrose oil

Why do people recommend the pellets rather than other forms?

the pellets are a strong concentration form, the tablets while good are weaker substance

Do you think it would help him?

Yes im sure it will it helped my guy alot - he had a bad limp due to his shoulder for a while but since being on the Luposan he's fine.

Can it be taken with tablets like the candyl? He also has to take an antibiotic everyday for something else that can't be operated on because he has a bad heart. Would that affect taking the luposan?

Im not too sure about this but you will need to ask your vet... give him the website for Luposan and ask him / her to look into it.

done be surprised if your vet has never heard of it, most irish vets recommend Arthiraid and i found it useless.

What exactly is it? - it's a joint/glucosamine supplement that zooplus sell
Why do people recommend the pellets rather than other forms? The pellets are stronger/concentrated and I find it easer to feed that way rather than powder stuck to their bowl etc
Do you think it would help him? Possibly - it made a big difference to my boy
Can it be taken with tablets like the candyl? He also has to take an antibiotic everyday for something else that can't be operated on because he has a bad heart. Would that affect taking the luposan? I don't think it'd cause any problems but you can check with your vet to make sure- I've always given it with other medications and no problems...there's only so much they can absorb at once so you may have better results spreading the dose out throughout the day - that's what I do for Bailey

Tumeric paste would be another thing to look into. I've been giving it to Bailey again the last few weeks and it's helped with stiffness after he pulled muscles..

Thank you both for the very detailed answers. Cocker, I have my own two dogs on salmon oil and they love it. They are both young dogs but I hear so much good things about it I went ahead and put them on it and they are in such great condition. My parents use cod liver oil every other day for their dogs as that would have been something they always used for their many dogs over the years. Should I suggest they switch to the salmon oil instead?

Tk123, turmeric paste?! As in turmeric you'd put in a curry? That's very interesting. I'll have to read about that!
He's due back for a check up in two weeks so I'll print off that lupsosan info and have a chat with the vet about using it in conjunction with the other tablets he's on.

Firstly on the cod liver oil... I know loads of people who use this and we did for my parents dogs when we were smaller but i have read a few times its not great that dog fish oils are better... do they use cod liver oil actually for dogs? or is it human dosage?

    http://canigivemydog.com/cod-liver-oil

I saw a huge difference in my cocker after 3/4 weeks... he was jumping around and we still give it everyday along with the salmon oil. My vet had recommended he will need injections in the future but so far so good. now when he needs them and other tablets of course he will get them but im trying to keep him off medication as long as i can.

BTW - tk123... after you post on another thread a few weeks ago i switched from Canident to plaque off.... huge difference - thanks for the recommendation :D

Thanks! They use cod liver oil for dogs. Just a little drop every second day. I might encourage them to swap over to the salmon oil whenever the current bottle of cod liver runs out. Feeling very positive about the luposan from what I'm reading here. I cant wait to get talking to vet.

My vet actually recommended it to me a couple of weeks ago. I do give them oily fish so didn't bother lol! :o Really he just needs rest so that's what he's getting. He's quite content to potter around on the flexi lead and I plan to avoid squirrel hotspots in the park so he doesn't get frustrated.

For the turmeric you make a paste - http://www.turmericlife.com.au/turmeric-recipes-golden-paste/ I have Bailey back on it a few weeks now - I had tried him with it twice before using coconut oil and the cat-wee smell was awful and didn't go away like they say it will even adding the cinnamon. This time around I used olive oil and he's up to 1/2 a teaspoon twice a day and so far so good - his wee is a bit smelly but he's doesn't have a cloud of cat-wee scented mist around him lol! I picked up a tip on tumeric users group on FB to use a silicon mat as a mould and freeze the portions which is much easier to deal with too. This one from Homestore & More makes 1/8 of a teaspoon doses
