There would be no business version in the UK, they are all same categorization as private car.

I would think buying one new in Ireland would work out cheaper and simpler.

Thanks AD, appreciate the info. That would explain why I can't find "business/commercial" versions of the Touareg in the UK. Does that mean there are no vehicle classifications in the UK for tax purposes? All cars, vans and jeps etc are just "vehicles" regardless of whether they are privately registered or registered by businesses?

I suppose the thing I really need to figure out is how do I ensure a VW Touareg I import is registered as a category B vehicle i.e. a "Car derived and jeep derived van" attracting VRT at the rate of 13.3% of the OMSP? Is it just a matter of calling the VRT office and talking to them about it?

You'll need to ensure it meets the very complicated set of criteria, laid out by the NSAI, for a Category N1 Commercial.

The UK doesn't have separate classifications for Passenger and Commercial vehicles as far as VAT goes, and they don't have VRT, so they don't sell the "Commercial" versions a lot cheaper than the "Passenger" versions - hence why you can't find them for sale.

What the difference is between a Category A (Passenger) Toureg and a Category B (N1 Commercial) Toureg is, I haven't a clue, but to get the 13.3% VRT when registering in Ireland, it will have to meet N1 classification.

Thnaks ROR, I assume (always a dangerous thing to do) that as there are N1 classified Touaregs being sold by VW dealers here it must be possible to get a Touareg in the UK which will satisfy the N1 criteria.

AFAIK the R-Line models are the commercial spec a la http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/volkswagen/touareg/used-2016-161-volkswagen-touareg-comm-westmeath-fpa-200714454233924480 and there are R-Line models available in the UK like this identical looking one - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201509016512580?page=1&model=touareg&make=volkswagen&keywords=R-line&maximum-age=up_to_4_years_old&postcode=sw1x9bl&sort=default&radius=1500&onesearchad=used&search-target=usedcars&logcode=p

    It's not straightforward is it???

Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

I sure did. Imported a 5 seat UK Touareg and got it classified as an N1 commercial literally days before they amended the rules ref using laser measurements etc.

I don't think you can do it anymore but I'm not 100% sure if that as there's a well known 4X4 dealer on the N11 between Dublin and Bray who recently had some 171 Range Rovers and even a Bentley (or some other €200,000 type super luxury car) for sale which were N1 registered commercials!!
