Barbados to abolish Monarchy.

Comments

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,873 ✭✭✭melissak

Won't effect me too much. I didn't know they had a monarch.
Is the British empire slowly falling asunder? Barbados is set to abolish Queen Elizabeth and have a different ceremonial head of state.

New Zealand has also opted for it's new flag without the Union Jack and I also though I head some noise about Australia abolishing the monarchy as head of state too.

The British empire (although it brought some civilization) has plundered and caused so much damage and has stripped some places of it's natural resources and local people.

They are slowly starting to lose their stranglehold on the World.

It's not the 18th century anymore mate. The queen's mug on a few notes is hardly a "stranglehold" on the world. The British "empire" is long gone.

Australia voted to keep the monarchy only a few years ago iirc

I think that was because the proposal involved the imposition of an (well, another) unelected head of state. A case of 'better the devil you know', rather than an outright rejection of becoming a republic.

    I did not know that.

What stranglehold? A few tinpot territories that they prop up, give over will you.
Most of the Commonwealth can stand on their own two feet in 15.

And I do acknowledge the huge impact they've had (both positive and negative) on the world but the Empire is no more.

Don't send them back, they don't know we have them. That camouflage has worked for so long now.

In fairness, can't blame them really - any day now they could have Prince Charles acting as their ceremonial head of state.

The British empire started falling apart near 100 years ago, when the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Then they lost parts of Asia like India, not to mention the American empire was rising up and the Soviet Union. The empire is long gone.

The UK has been in decline as a power for decades, Germany has overtaken the UK as most powerful country in western Europe.

Ive debated this with monarchists on different forums.

Theres alot of 'oh you're finished' 'no no you're finished' type of comments but objectively there is a long groundswell for republics in Australia and Canada.

The polls go up and down but the trend over time is towards ditching the monarchs.

However, they have themselves well set up in the constitutions of countries so they're difficult to get rid of and require referendums and all sorts of complications. Plus they can rely on the non-voter, the undecided and those who just can't be arsed.

When lizzy kicks it in a few years it will be interesting, I think Australia may drop them thereafter. For a change a major event is required.

Aus came very close, and in fact I think that the republicans had the majority numbers, but lost due to a campaign designed to divide republicans between two models.

As for the nz flag it was just a vote on which design would be the competition to the current one. I reckon they'll stick with the one they have.

As for Barbados, well done to them.

Might be more accurate to say they voted against the similarly undemocratic alternative they were presented with.

As in an elected president? What's undemocratic about that?

It was a bad campaign that lost that.

The empire was lost years ago and Ireland started it.

By the way, New Zealand has not decided to change it's flag yet, merely what the alternative can be and now they must vote for that or the current one.

I personally cannot understand why any country that was occupied by a colonial power would maintain ties and symbols with its previous oppressors. They should all cut lose and create their own identities.

Also, it's time for UK to update its honours system and remove all empire references.

Why do people look down on Britain for "loosing the Empire" yet hate colonialism?

    Make your mind up!

That statement only makes sense if there is an indigenous majority or they maintain authority.

It's a spectacular island. They love the Irish.

I was lucky enough to visit. "Put on some cream." I spent the whole day on the beach - 40 degrees plus - "please put on cream mate". "It's grand I tan well."

24 hours later, my back blistered up and I ended up in hospital.

It wasn't going to be an elected president.

Nominations for the Head of State or President could have been made by any Australian, but these nominations would have been received by a nominations committee who would then decide on the most suitable candidates for the position and provide a report to the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister would then select a candidate after securing support from the Leader of the Opposition.

There would be no election the Prime Minister picked and may people did not like this option.

If it had been a elected president then most think that it would have passed.
