Insert Stove to heat 18 rads or just the hot water.

    Hi All,

I'm looking at swapping out my 20" Grant Back Boiler for an insert/inset stove. My question is simple; whether to go for a full back boiler type or just enough to heat the hot water while keeping most of the heat for the room.

A bit of set-up information. The house is a bungalow with dormer, the main heating is provided by oil fired condensing boiler and one of the heating lines passes through the back boiler in the fireplace (like it was a radiator). The main room where the back boiler is situated is a large area and opens up in to the dining room and kitchen forming a 'U' shape. The fireplace is situated in the central divide between the two areas. The ceilings are 9ft high and the total cubic capacity of this area is approximately 100 cubic meters. Counting the double panel radiators as two rads there are eighteen radiators to be heated in the house; mostly with quite large panels.

My thinking is that it is asking just too much to expect a small boiler to be able to heat all those rads as well as provide the required amount of heat to heat the large open space of the living/dining/kitchen area and so I my feeling is to just forget about trying to heat the radiators at all and just heat the hot water and of course the room.

Any thoughts on the above would be very welcome. If there was a suggestion of a recommended insert stove as well that would be great.

    Many thanks
    Dave
