Anyone can tax a van as a commercial, you need to make a declaration that you use it as that, no need for VAT no.

I inquired with the tax office in Ballina and they said you have to have a VAT number, herd number or registered self employed?

    Private tax = private insurance.

Axa would not allow me to insure my caddy van privately, as it was a commercial vehicle.
I wanted it private so I could drive other insured cars third party, but no joy. I can only now drive cars that I am named on the insurance.

If you buy a van that is already taxed do you automatically get a letter with a pin number once the van is in your name/

If so do you have to give a VAT number when you renew online/

To tax a van commercially you only need to use you VAT number if you are registered for VAT, plenty of people in business have no need to be registered for VAT.
There is a form you can fill out, with contains your details and your PPS number. You get it stamped at a Garda station, and present it to the tax office when first taxing the van, after that you will get a yearly notification and pin number.

    Thank you.

If I buy a van that is already taxed and I changed ownership into my name, is it just a case of getting a notification and PIN

Sorry about punctuation, my shift key is having issues :)

No, for the first time taxing of a goods vehicle in your name the reminder won't have the PIN on it as you won't have submitted the Goods Only Declaration form. You'll have to do that to your Motor Tax office before your reminders will start having PINs on them.
