Edinburgh in January

Hi guys. We have been to Edinburgh before and loved it, and would love to go back for a weekend with our child (11 y/o). However we have a pretty busy calendar for at least 5/6 months next year and for me in work Sept-Nov are busy. It literally leaves us with January or August (hubbie can't get time off in July).
So we were thinking of Edinburgh in mid Jan for a weekend (2 nights).
What would it be like at that time of the year? Would the usual tourist attractions be open? What would the weather be like? We are just a bit worried that if there was snow or a storm that our flight wouldn't go or be madly delayed and that's the weekend and our money gone.

I went to Scotland and took in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen in a week in February a few years back...

Still remember the cold and snow and not sure if connecting buses in Scotland would be running with the weather. <-- That is only something that would be determined based on conditions at the time etc so not exactly something you can control or predict unfortunately. You can look ahead at the predicted weather for that time and see if that would affect your decision. One site states a low of 1°C, but Edinburgh has always been wicked cold from my experience, though not as bad as Aberdeen thankfully.

All attractions were open when I wanted bar one museum. On looking at the website though they did state what day(s) and time(s) they would be open due to it being quiet. <-- What I'd say there is to look at where you wish to go, online, and see their calendar/schedule and pre-plan from that.

You could buy your flights and pay for the flexibility of cancelling or just wait a while more and see what your thoughts are closing the date you wish to travel.

Hope that helps in some way,

I wouldn't worry about the weather. It takes 'severe' weather more then just the bad kind for airports and airlines to cancel flights. If it happened you would be indeed very unlucky. I have lost count how many times I have flown into Edinburgh in all sorts of conditions and never had a flight cancelled.

Two years ago, I was there in mid December & It was bloody Baltic. I'd imagine it would be even worse in January. It was our first time there, so we did all touristy stuff... the Castle, browsing the shops on the Royal Mile, the Palace of Hollyrood House, the Scotch whiskey experience tour thingy etc etc. Thankfully, they were all indoors & were very enjoyable, but getting from A to B was painful in the frigid temperatures. When we were there, we had the Xmas market festivities and atmosphere to make being out of doors a bit more tolerable, but I'd imagine it would be hard work in mid January.

If you are worried about weather related travel delays, get some good travel insurance. It takes all the worry out of booking a trip at that time of year.
