Airport Check-In - Job Interest after the Leaving Certificate.

    Hi There,
    So I am doing my Leaving Certificate this year and I would love to work in the airport at check-in (Customer Services) so the point is:
    1. Can you apply straight away when a particular airline e.g. - Aer Lingus are hiring?
    2. Is experience in Customer Service essential to get into this job?
    3. Anyone that id currently/has worked in airport check-in - please tell me about the job.

    Many (it'd be "most" at airports other than Dublin) checkin agents work for a handling agent, not an airline. Aer Lingus and Ryanair do their own handling at Dublin but other airlines use companies such as Servisair and Sky Handling Partner. You should also apply to these and can end up working across multiple airlines depending on a number of factors. Ryanair may actually use outsourced but Ryanair-only contractors rather than employed staff these days but its close to the same thing.

    Customer facing experience of any kind wouldn't usually be essential but would help hugely.

    Aer Lingus will hire in the first few months of the year for Customer Service Agents but, as mentioned above, customer facing experience will be of huge help to you

    Thanks everyone for the quick replies , It's much appreciated! - Okay so I am guessing that it is NOT essential to have customer facing experience so therefore I guess when Aer Lingus or Ryanair are hiring in DUBLIN (Ideally) I can apply after my Leaving Certificate??
    I actually have an Auntie who worked at Check-In in Dublin Airport for a Year or Two I think?? - Anyways she did say that she worked in an office environment for a year and then went on to Aer Lingus and liked it , She said the hours were long enough and Ryanair (Check-In Agents) were getting paid MORE than the Aer Lingus (Check-In Agents)! Other than that she said it was quite enjoyable.

    P.S. - Not sure if this matters much but here I go anyways - I will be 18 when I finish the Leaving Certificate , I am also a Gay Male so I am guessing this type of job suits me because I have good I.T. Skills , I am trying to build up on my Social and Inter-Personal Skills as this job requires those skills.

    Aer Lingus won't take you on without experience and they also hire from May so you would be to late in the season for the job. I could be wrong but the applications for part time customer service staff has been and gone with them as well.

    I read that as him saying the job would suit him because he has good IT skills, could be wrong though

    They'll want to know how you have gone the extra mile for customers in the past, dealt with irate people, showed flexibility and so on, so having that experience is pretty much essential if you want to stand a chance. This could be from working in any other customer service type job (retail etc)

    he brought sexuality into it. It's not inappropriate for him to be called out on that remark in context. Loads of people have entered or applied for customer services jobs **** I've done them so can we be educated by said poster as to what sexuality has to do with obtaining a job with EI customer services ? Yeah he is 18, therefore an adult.. old enough to use the internet and be responsible and accountable for his own opinions.. he has been asked to clarify.. should he wish he will.. no biggie.

    Pat.. Don't need to cut the dude some slack.. I'm not hating on him at all.. but if he came to the thread for honest feedback .. well he made the remark.. I'm interested in clarification not for me I couldn't give a f*ck but if he thinks being gay is somewhat of a leg up as could be interpreted (sorry if I got that wrong)... obtaining a position in EI is hard enough as it is and the deal breaker will not be if you are gay or straight or otherwise but the competencies and experiences you can show them. It would be remiss to say otherwise... to the OP great.. if you know your IT.. if you have good references and a background in customer services and dealing with people... can do a good interview and be positive, customer focused and knowledgeable about the company.. that is what they will be after.... you will be in a super competitive environment should you get an interview but that is the same for everyone.... sorry if I sounded critical in my previous post.. not my intention but to bring up sexuality in the context ... well safe to say it wont be a factor .. I wish you luck..

    We were all 17 once.. well i hope so unless you owned a Delorean and could skip a few.. fact is when i was 17 and looking for the same sort of job and in the airport i was open minded and took on the advice that those who worked there imparted to me.. no more no less.. if you ask for feedback and get some... what can i say.. Mentioning you are gay in an interview is not going to get you that job in EI... they wont give a ****... if you are gay in that job and you dont mention it .. still doesnt mean you will do a better job then anyone straight.. trans.. gender fluid or a trekkie.. what you can add to the company as in your talent.. thats what its all about.. the horses are asleep.

    Sorry for the late replies!
    My uttermost apologise if I offended anyone regarding the gay part and yes I am only 17 :)
    I phrased it wrong I guess - human error I'm guilty.
    I meant to keep it as I'm gay (not that it matters) but some people could relate to my situation because in school if I tell anyone this they are all like (oh right mostly gay people work in those type of jobs...) wrong to say I know but that's why I mentioned it!
    Now all that aside thank you all for your help on the actual point which is THE JOB it's much appreciated :-)

    Thanks for the reply. I would be in agreement with Strumms. You chances of getting this or any other position are based on your abilities, experience, and how well you present yourself at interview.
    Dont be listening to anyone who tells you that certain jobs are for you. Your sexuality has no impact on your career.

At the end of the day I put myself in your shoes at the same age I desperately wanted a job in the airport and customer services was my way in and so it became. The feedback I'd give is as I would see it 18 years later... no point in bull****ting you..

    it's great that you want the job and are asking how to go about it... I don't know your background but even small things like working in a shop or any avenue like dealing with customers in any regard will stand to you... read up on Aer Lingus... if you were to get an interview it will impress the EI folks no end if you can rattle off simple facts like when they started operations.. say the general makeup of the fleet and future plans etc and any company facts... shows people you have done you homework and want it.. customer and brand focused and know about the company and sell youself... from CV to interview... The sexuality stff.. non issue so forget about it.. and good luck..
