I've always had a HDMI and a satellite cable (don't know proper name) running from my Sky box to our TV.
Last night I was tidying up some wiring while Sky was still on and I unplugged the satellite cable but the TV continued to play Sky programmes.

What's the deal there? is the Satellite cable only needed for recording or am I using a legacy setup which isn't needed.

You only need the HDMI cable from the sky box to the TV. The other cable was likely a SCART cable that was completely unused.

You need two feeds from the satellite dish to the box to record and watch and one to just watch but these are very different, screw on connectors and don't go near the TV.
