VW Passat engine

    Hey all,

I have a 2009 VW Passat with the 2.0 CR 170bp common rail engine and about 3 months ago it started leaking coolant,

I topped up with blue coolant even though there was pink coolant in it and it was okay since but during the week it started to loose coolant again rapidly, took the car to my local gargae and they replaced the radiator as it was leaking at the sides where the metal & plastic joins (no sign of physical damage either)

the following day I went for a hour long motorway drive and all was fine until I came to a toll bridge, went to drive on again and the engine started chucking in 1st 2nd & 3rd, nursed her along until it stalled!

I was stuck on the side of the motorway and with an exit half a mile from me I started the car by keeping the throttle fully pressed otherwise it would cut out, there was a loud rapping banging noise coming form the engine but I chanced it for the half mile to get off the road,

the oil light started to flash & beep even though there was plenty of oil, the coolcant level remained the same and wasn't discoloured.

any ideas on what I could be looking at.... sounds like the engine is fecked but with 130k on the clock, full service history and timing belt done recently I'm finding it hard to digest this! could the .5 litre of blue coolant I used cause this trouble? could there be something wrong with the engine to cause the rad to go in the first place...?

    any comments would be appreciated,

    thanks.

Sounds like your big end has failed. Did it sound like a knocking noise? Increase with revs? Is the sump cracked?
You replaced the belt but was the water pump done?
Wouldn't start unless accelerator to the floor so it could also be a fuelling issue, fuel pump maybe.
Id get it to a mechanic.. A good one.. Asap

Yes a knocking noise (really loud) and seemed to increase with the revs,

Was picth dark so couldnt see much so got it recovered and gone to a good mechanic,

Water pump was done along with the belt by VW in Carlow,

    Time will tell I suppose!

A loud knocking noise increasing with revs sounds like a big end gone to me. I speak from experience, same thing happened my car albeit a petrol.

Have you owned the car since new OP? Has it been properly serviced etc?

I do know that you're never supposed to mix coolant colours but not sure if that would cause the engine to go.

As said above, a decent mechanic is what you need now.

Have you overheated it while driving with the original leak? Or could you have a head gasket problem that perhaps lead to the rad failure?

Probably wasn't bled properly following the radiator replacement engine sounds like it's a gonner. Not nice 2 weeks away from Xmas.

Think we may be clutching at straws for head gasket? .... But let us all know result! "We live in hope"

And just to answer the OP's question relating to a mix of coolant, while this isn't great in a long term situation, there is no way that this would cause an issue similar to what you have described. It will still function in terms of acting as coolant, just not as efficiently as it should. When the rad was replaced it would have had a fresh batch of coolant filled by the garage.

When it comes to issues and just trying to nurse it home, anything that produces a red light is an immediate stop. It can be hard to do this sometimes though, with the instinct to get clear when so close to home.

Increasing with revs... Big end then and I also speak from experience. Horrible time to happen.

To me it sounds like an oil pump failure. Engine starved of oil.

    something I forgot to ask...

if the engine is fecked and I'm trying around for a second hand one am I restricted to another 2.0 Passat engine or would an Audi/Skoda etc engine fit with a swapping over of a few bits & pieces,

mine is the EA189 170BP CR common rail enigne, the one that is affected by the emissoins debacle,

probably looking at 1500 - 2000 euro for an engine? - Credit Union here I come!!!
