Hey folks , My licenses turns 6 months on the first of feb.
I haven't got the 12 lessons fully done but i want to be able to sit my test in the first or second week in February [ As i start an internship in February and i want to be able to drive to it] I plan on getting a car and being insured as i hit 21 on March the 8th.

Ive heard you cant book a date until you have all your lessons completed?

Can I book my test now for lets say the 2nd of Feb (presuming i have all the lessons done by the first.)

    Thanks

No, you have to have all 12 EDT lessons done before you can book your test. Its one of the online application requirements.

There is a distinction between booking a test and being issued a test date. As far as I know you can book a test but you won't be issued a test date until you have the EDT completed. Your booking would be on 'EDT hold' until you've completed.

Logically, if you were on a 3rd or subsequent permit (and you needed to renew your permit) and therefore needed a test booking, you would not be able to book a practical or even renew your permit. Whether you can book it online or not (as above) I don't know but I can tell you it's possible to have a test booking without having your EDT completed.

So just go online and try to book away mad. I don't believe they'll even issue you a provisional date yet. You can always get on with your EDT and sort out your booking date after you have your EDT and your 6 month wait under control.

Yeah sorry. I mean getting a date.
Like if I was to book now and say I want a date in feb. and I don't finish the edts. Till January . Will I not get a test till 10 weeks later

I heard you have to pay without getting to see dates even

Prob calling them would be the best

    Also, can't decide.
What would happen then if you were on your 2nd provisional but for whatever reason you hadn't done your edts
Do you have go back to the theory

You can apply for the test when you have the 12 lessons done and if it takes ages to get a date you can apply for a cancellation anyway. Took me 8 weeks to get a date...was not able to choose one when booking as no dates were available.

I only had 4 EDTs done when I got my second provisional. No need to repeat the theory.

There's only one way of having to repeat the theory test (outside of being instructed by the courts) and that's by letting your permit expire for 5 years or more.

There are no catch 22's. The important thing to understand is that there will always be a way for you to continue learning aside from jumping some hoops,

No , what I mean as a side note is that you are finished your 2nd provisional and you want to renew, so you have to book a test . But you can't , because you haven't the 12 edts ???

My main q was about booking a test before you finished your edts, although, not the answer I wanted, I think I got it .

I know it's a bit of bureaucratic tetris but hang on...

The test booking is a precondition of getting the permit. The completion of your EDT is only a precondition of taking a driving test. However, completing your EDT is not a precondition of making a test booking [again, accepting your booking application and fee does not directly entitle you to sit a driving test].

If you get to the end of your second permit and you don't have your EDT done, you can still book a test and get your 3rd or subsequent permit. In all cases, you have to be able to continue to learn even if you're not eligible to take a practical test.

In a nutshell, the RSA create mechanisms to make it appear that if you don't straighten up, the doors will be shut on you when realistically, they're obliged to leave a half a dozen windows open...

The learner rules have come a long way even since I started driving back in the early noughties but they'll never invoke laws with real teeth to force people to learn to proper standard like elsewhere in Europe. They have too many legacy issues from the dark ages and too small an infrastructure and that's why we have this level of scribbledygook.

If you are on your second learner permit which is due to expire, then in order to get a third or subsequent you have two options.

Either you have sat a test in the last 2 years and failed, where you would have been given a certificate of failure, or you provide proof of a test booking, not a test date but just proof of the booking. This will allow your application to be processed.

The only reason you would need to sit a theory test again is if your permit has expired by more than 5 years. So basically form the expiry date of your learner permit you have 5 years to renew, you go past those 5 years without renewing and you lose your entitlements and will have to start from scratch.
