    Hi all,

I'm going to view a car tomorrow I found on Donedeal. It's a 2002, 1.2 Polo. Although photos can of course be deceiving, it looks fairly clean. I'm just wondering what sort of stuff I should be looking for (i.e. anything for this type of car in particular)?

See if the seller is the owner on the logbook, if not they are possibly a part time dealer and car might be a lemon. If you type the reg in to the
vehicle transaction query on Motor Tax website it will tell you of any changes of ownership in last 3 months. https://www.motortax.ie/PSE

See if the timing belt has been changed and if it has had regular oil changes. I suppose on a car that age the gearbox and clutch would be worth taking a good luck at by cycling through the gears and giving the car a good run.

The sticky at the top of the forum on buying used is excellent.

polo 1.2 if its a 3 cylinder engine ,if the engine rocks back and forth vigorously possible valve issue and timing chain issues.

Oh I've read it and it is excellent. I was looking more for this type of car in general though :) thanks though!

Those 1.2 engines are known for failing valves/rings and then the em missions go through the roof and lose compression.

I didn't take it anyway. There were too many differences from the advert and the tyres were so worn they were showing wire, and suggested the tracking was off. The owner claims not to have realised but didn't then drop the price to reflect this. It was too much money for a car that, at the end of the day, couldn't be legally drove, and if the condition of the car and tyres were wrong, I wouldn't have liked to discover what else was wrong.

big list and starting from rear suspension bushes in lower front suspension arms, must be well maintained to have not been serviced with tyres like that ,glad you walked away.
