Just going to say what everyone will, ring around or find a good broker nobody can say where will be the cheapest or who is the best. It will all depend on different details that are unique to you.

But saying that insuring a 1.7L car for your first car will be expensive, or should i say more expensive.

Nowhere. You don't mention how old you are but assuming you're under 25 it'll definitely be over 2000.

Sean even though a 1.7L engine is small, in this Country it's considered quite large. Best go and get a 1 liter Corsa or Yaris or something and use that for a couple of years.

FBD offered me 1116 EUR for my insurance(Third party fire & theft) when I was completing application form online. But when I got a call from them, they have said that FBD will only quote you if you have 1 years no claims. But in the online application form I could choose None in No Claim Discount section!

If you're a first timer forget about online quotes. Just start ringing around.

    Why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Because online quotes are designed to be cheap to attract business, meaning they are setup to favor low risk drivers. Young/inexperienced drivers or those with no previous claims free driving don't fall into that category.

    Why?

because thats how business still works in Ireland. Im going to assume you're young , and I even know myself at 25 that people my age and younger will do just about anything to not have to have an actual phone conversation with somebody but thats how insurance works.

The internet auto quoters will almost never give you the best price unless your a 40 year old woman in the civil service driving a 1.2 3 year old fiesta living in a cork suburb.

Even from the same providers you may get one quote online , but a cheaper one if you phoned them.

Your better off OP ringing around a few insurance brokers. They can often undercut online or direct quotes from the very same insurance companies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭LawlessBoy

Much better off ringing. My insurance is up in January and said I would get a few online quotes to see what I might be in for. The cheapest quote I got was over 4000 with the highest being 123 with more then 11000. They even rang me to ask if I wanted to take the quote I just started laughing on the phone.

Get a list of phone numbers have the details of the car handy and just sit down and ring around it really is the best way. First Ireland wore the cheapest for me two years running with chill coming close to them if that's any use.

I have got a call from Aviva! They will only quote you if you have 1 years no claims. The same like in FBD! :(

Ring a broker, they'll at least be able to give you a few quotations that are real. Find out who the quotations are with and then ring them directly.

Might be cheaper to ring directly after, might not be. Either way, you may give up checking online and buy some credit for your phone.

    Ring Campion or FirstIreland.

    They're the only 2 I found useful.

Its borderline impossible to get insured as a first time driver. I can't even get quoted on my car 1.9l diesel. Literally nowhere will take me. Even with a years driving experience and a full license. I've even tried messing around with my age to see When I can get insured, and it will apparently take another 3 years before I can get a quote for my car, and even then its like 3K. The only way I managed to get around it currently was for my dad to insure his house, farm, tractor, quadbike, cars and everything with one company and have them throw me in the bundle. Even that was a long shot, but it worked. Best bit is, my car will be 14 years old next year and even more uninsurable. Oh joy.

Not really relevant, but I might as well mention this gem. My dad has a Landcruiser. This year, the company we went with last year wanted 4K to put me on as a named driver with a full license. 4K. Feckin' great. 4K to drive a jeep worth a pinch more than that. Then again, my insurance costs me more than my car is worth. Best bit is, the company ended up going with this year only charged €348 for me to be a named driver on the jeep. There was no way I'd pay 4 grand to have a backup vehicle for when/if my car ever breaks down.

insurance seems to be getting harder and harder for younger drivers to get now. I never even knew they could refuse to give quotes because of lack of experience.. thank god i'm a few years on the road. Their still robbing me though :(

I would try quote Devil too, they claim to love young drivers.

But as i don't know your age, you could well be looking at around 3k for your insurance these days.

And do you know why? Because when your run that Landcruiser into a another car the value of the cars is the least of the problem; it's the medical bills (easily hundred of thousands) that's going to cost the insurance company money and that has no connection to car value.

Let me tell you guys my case, I am 29M from India came to Ireland in 2014 (working as IT consultant). I have my full Indian driving license valid since 2006. I wanted to swap my Indian license to Irish license as I am kind of settled here and I followed the NDLS rules and got the Irish full license recently (by passing theory test first and then after 6 months the driving test).
I had BMW 530D 3.0L car in India and now wanted to try the Gasoline engine here. I have selected an Audi S5 3.0T (333HP) V6T engine and a dealer from wexford is giving me a great deal. The catch here is I literally tried 10+ insurance brokers/companies for the insurance quote and they just disconnects the call as soon as I tell them about the car model/engine and my EU driving history.
I tried explaining them that I have about 8+ years of driving experience in India (same right hand drive cars/ left hand lanes) and as per rules I have swapped my license to Irish full license. I even said that I am ready to pay voluntary excess damages of upto 10k Euros (the first 10k Euros damages will be paid by me before making any claim). Even then no one is willing to insure me :(
So by this logic, no one here can dream of driving a mid end (yes I say 3.0 Litres a mid end) cars if they don't have any EU driving history. I am literally broke and now accepted that I have to get rid off my love for big cars if I wanna settle in Ireland :'(

Xcess direct are re-entering the Irish market.

They are essentially a company that quote people that other insurers won't, could be convictions, claims experience, car type etc.

They give reasonable prices but the benefits are poor and they have a claims excess of €2000 to €3000. Could be an option.

They are broker only but I'm unsure exactly when they will begin writing business again.

Hi Saul, are they offline at the moment? Because I can see their website (http://www.xsdirect.ie/) still active.

I just read yesterday that they were going to re enter the Irish market, not sure if they have yet though. If there is a phone number on the site perhaps try calling them?
