OK Folks, are we going to sit around whinging among ourselves about this or are we going to let our politicians (who get to vote on this) what we think of it?

I suggest we do the latter and embark in a serious lobbying campaign of our TDs. Everyone should write to their TD and tell them what they think of this. And here's tbe beauty of it: we can get Alcohol Action Ireland, the numpties who have been pressing for this, to help us:D:D:D:D

You see these finger-wagging nanny-stating do gooders have their own website which has a neat little feature that lets you contact your TD. It's all set up for you to write him or her a letter and send it with just a mouse click. No need to look up addresses or any of that mullarkey. You just have to know the constituency in which you live and the app will do the rest.

Have a look at this link

They have a letter all written up asking your TD to SUPPORT the Bill. Helpfully, however, you can er amend it to post your own message.

I suggest replacing what is there with something like (add your own personal touch) the following:

    Dear Sir/Madam etc

I am writing to you to express my concern regarding the proposed Public Health (Alcohol) Bill which has as its main provision the establishment of minimum pricing for alcoholic drinks in Ireland.

I sincerely believe that this policy is, at best, misguided and that its effects will be harmful rather than beneficial.

The minister and his supporters say that more expensive alcohol will reduce dependency. That it will reduce the quantity of alcohol consumed. That it will result in a healthier populace with fewer demands placed on our hospital and emergency services.

I think it is far more likely to fail in all of these objectives. Instead it will criminalise the poor, antagonise the middle classes, and do little to alter the behaviour of the most wealthy. It will not make a serious difference to the problems associated with alcohol consumption in Ireland and will instead enrich the drinks trade by increasing its margins.

I urge you to oppose this Bill when it comes before the Dail.

PS I affirm that I am not in any way associated with any aspect of the drinks industry other than being a fairly regular consumer of some of its products.

    Let's DO THIS!!! :D:D:D

    Okay.

Feel free to copy and paste this, everyone.

    "Dear Minister,

I'm not really bothered about minimum-pricing laws.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Moo."

It's irrelevant unfortunately. In Ireland, because of the party whip, once the cabinet makes up its mind the Dail is totally powerless to do anything about it.
We'd be better off crowd-funding a court challenge to the bill, I've been thinking about that for a while now. Get it to the ECJ, assuming their December 23 (?) ruling goes against minimum pricing, as expected.

I should setup an online shop and post beer/spirits to Ireland :D Even with the postage costs and a small transaction fee, it would be cost far less than to purchase the product in Ireland.

After Hours is not the place to start a campaign.
