Have I fitted this properly (stem raiser)?

I've fitted this, looks a bit odd??

The riser "bottomed out" on the top.of the steerer tube so I.had to use spacers to fill the gap below it.
I've gained the height of the riser itself which I think Im happy with.

    That's a fairly long steerer!

It looks ok just be sure to tighten it up correctly. Tighten down the top cap first to the point where you can no longer turn the spacers then tighten up the stem bolts and the bolts on the riser too.

Edit: looking at it again, does the stem clamp in to the riser?

I did it that way alright.
    Its just clamped onto/around it?

Came across a couple of pictures:

They seem to be done along the same lines!

That's putting it mildly. Are you sure the frame is the correct size for you?

Is the stem clamped to the steerer tube or are you using that lower clamp thingie to bolt on an extension to your steerer tube. If the latter, I'd have serious questions about the safety of that arrangement. Put it this way, I'd need to understand a lot more about the forces operating on that arrangement before I'd hit any sort of speed going downhill with it.

They seem to be a universal solution to a common problem:

"The FWE stem riser is the perfect addition to your bike if you want to raise your handlebars for more comfortable and relaxed riding position.

The FWE Stem Riser simply clamps to your steerer tube and provides a higher location for your stem to attach.
    Use: Increasing stem mounting height"

I'd love to see a side picture of the bike now with that stem riser fitted.

Personally, I would not feel safe cycling with that on my bike. Show a full side on profile picture of the bike. If you need the bars that high above the head tube the bike is completely the wrong size for you, and you should sell it and buy something suitable rather than cycle on a compromised, convoluted and, in my opinion, dangerous solution like that.

As for it being a common problem, I have only ever seen one other bike with something like this on it, so it's not that widespread.
