Would the Alba "brand" put you off? Any other reason NOT to buy this tablet?
Spec is as good as much more expensive big brands for that size.

Don't know about build quality, on phone at min, see if its in Amazon or somewhere with user reviews.

Ignore professional reviews, they're sh1te to go by.

Battery will be crap but its crap in most tablets except for maybe lenovo yoga.

Not too worried about the battery as it's for a 10yo and he's only going to be allowed an hour a day, except for weekends. Specs say up to 5-hour battery and that will be plenty.

Look it up on Argos' website in the UK (argos.co.uk)

Can't post links at the moment for some reason, but just search for Alba 10 Inch 16GB Wi-Fi Tablet

They have 49 reviews and the average (out of 5 stars) is 4.6.
    That's overwhelmingly positive (over 90%)
I might pick one up for myself. :)

I picked one up last night and first impressions are good.
Firstly, it's no iPad and the edges are a bit rough. But it comes with a blue silicon bumper case which provides protection. I found it a bit unresponsive but then I discovered it had a protective film already installed. It's a bit slow and could do with more RAM and the speakers are a bit tinny.
Having said all that it has a great big clear screen which was my main requirement. I loaded a few HD movies on to a micro sd card and they played and looked great. I also streamed some sports and that also looked and played great. 10 minutes playing monument valley and it was good too. Browsing was a bit slow while I was downloading updates. So multitasking will probably be a bit painful at times. Don't know about the battery life as I have it plugged in all the time.
As I said earlier it's no iPad but it's but if you know it's limitations the big wide screen is great for movies, etc on the go. I'll be hanging onto it but won't be selling my iPad mini either.

Tempting but a Tab with 2GB RAM would probably be worth the extra?

Argos have a 10" ASUS with similar Specs but it has the 2GB RAM @ €185 but it's out of stock in my location Link:

    Typical alright!

I don't think 1GB RAM is good for anything these days so it makes the OP's TAB a deal breaker for me.

OK just my opinion here and I'm a tech fan, not an expert. Screen is noticeably low resolution for that size, poor processor, very low ram! I can't comment on build quality, sound or screen quality ( viewing angles and brightness). However I wouldn't touch this tablet, I think you can get far better for less. Look at the Chuwi hi8 on aliexpress for example

I'll tell you what is also a fantastic tablet for the price, the Lenovo s8-50. Honestly I sold mind recently on Adverts because I bought the Nexus 9 in the sales but wow it was amazing value! Scored 33000 Antutu, 2gb Ram, Stereo Front Facing Speakers, 1900 x 1200 IPS screen. Oh and it cost 130 euro!

Only dif between this and Samsung Galaxy S4 is .5 Ram and near €200. Similar Processors, same Resolution (Alba is IPS).

2GB Ram is just futureproofing, not a thing wrong with 1GB for vast majority of stuff.

You're comparing a 10" to 8" Tab spec and price.

Who on earth mentioned the Samsung galaxy tab? I certainly didn't and wouldn't recommend that either. I wasn't trying to say they were the same size screen merely that the Lenovo is far better value...... Which it is. 1gb ram will generally give you a stuttery tablet, fine but 2gb is far superior. Also for watching videos this resolution will do but for text the poor PPI is very discernible and will bother some.

Well the OP bought it for a 10-yr old, so 1 gb of ram will be plenty for what he/she will do with it at this stage of their lives.

He may well have bought it for a 10 year old but I'd imagine he posted it here for a slightly older audience.

Lenovo don't make it anymore but you can get it at Currys or littlewoods.

littlewoods are cheaper - cheaper again if you look around for a 10% off code.

Well then your whole post was just stupid so. You ran down the spec so I compared it to what I'd imagine is by far and away the biggest seller in that size and they are very similar.

You cant compare a 8" to a 10" and say one is better value, (inchs are big bucks with these things, you paid hundreds and literally all you got was .9inch)...actually you could compare, if the Alba had the Lenovos spec and that ain't gonna happen as you found out when you bought the Nexus...No SD card slot on the Nexus either.

You're post reads like all these "professional" reviews I've had the misfortune of having to wade through looking a Tablet for someone the last while, RAM, Stuttering and PPI, my elderly father gets on great with his original Samsung Tab 7 with a 600 x 1024 Res. I had a good play around with it and many others, as if one could tell the difference:rolleyes:, it's like all these people rushing out to buy 40" 4K TVs.

Going by all them reviews, theirs only a handful of tablets in the world with the Screen quality and RAM needed to update your Facebook.

Reg the Lenovo s8-50 dard23 mentioned i posted a thread a week ago when it was on sale for €134 in littlewoods, up to €179 again.
It was mentioned to me and after Googling it seems littlewoods customer service ain't the most reliable if something goes wrong especially with electronics.

There was thread about a Lenovo yoga 2 10inch here a few weeks ago, there's a few here and there available in argos http://checkargos.com/product/3224670#
Also aldi have a 10 inch tablet on sale Sunday.
It's the same tablet that was on sale a year ago.
I bought one and think it's a decent tablet with a hdmi out, cameras wouldn't be the best and the speakers not the loudest but apart from that i can't really fault it.
    https://www.aldi.ie/en/specialbuys/sun-13-dec/products-detail-page/ps/p/101-tablet-pc-1/
€200 but €190 if you have a €10 voucher from the paper.

John Lewis, but they are available on Amazon I think.
I would highly recommend looking at some of the Chinese tablets. Teclast have the air range which are lovely and powerful.
Also and most importantly, THEY HAVE AT LEAST 2GB OF RAM!!!! This is highly recommended or your OS will lag like an old man in a Fiat, your spouse will leave you and you will die young.
Oh and in all seriousness the Teclast air range use the same screen as the IPad Air. Just to give you an idea what you're getting.

No. They don't price match. You could return it unopened, and buy it again at the new price.

Going by all them reviews, theirs only a handful of tablets in the world with the Screen quality and RAM needed to update your Facebook.

Sorry mate, know this post was from a few days ago but had to weigh in. Your Dad might have no hassle with his Tab 7 and you might be happy enough but as someone who has owned, reviewed and mucked about with a fair few tablets from every level of the spectrum in my day I think it's quite misleading to just say nobody could tell the difference.

When the iPhone 4 came out a few years back it caused quite a stir because of its 'Retina' display, which was just a screen with a high pixel density (PPI). Nowadays almost all screens are at a high enough PPI that the discernable difference between them is negligable, but resolution is not the only consideration. There are things like viewing angles, temperature and colour accuracy which will all be terrible on a low-end 10" screen. Also, most manufacturers will tinker with Android to some degree, and many will bog down the device with bloatware and unnecessary apps that can hog the potentially limited amount of RAM.

You can absolutely compare an 8" and 10" device and say one is better value. I know without even checking that a 10" table for €100 has had some major compromises made somewhere and would suggest that it would not be a worthwhile purchase (in this case, a 1200x800 screen on a 10" tablet is a MAJOR compromise and will look blurry compared to most other options on the market currently). As such, an 8" tablet with 2GB RAM and a more contemporary screen resolution (and likely a higher quality desplay overall) would be good value at a higher premium in my opinion. Some of the Chinese brands break these rules a little as they may ship with much higher spec for the price but the compromise there is warranty, longevity and peace of mind.

I'd wager that your elderly father is only doing the odd bits and bobs on his tablet so it suits him perfectly, just like my mother is still perfectly happy with her 2013 Nexus 7. He's hardly filling it with apps and taxing any of the components with furious multitasking, which is of course his right, but it's a bit misleading to suggest that he's a typical use case.

I'd respectfully request that you not laugh off others' very valid comparisons of devices just because some of the specs either mean nothing to you or just don't matter to you because you might cause someone to make a poor purchasing choice. Just giving my two cents.

Just to mention here the recently launched MiPad 2 looks like a cracking tablet for the money! So good in fact I'd be tempted to sell my Nexus 9 just for the larger storage options. Also Xiaomi are very reputable and known for high end hardware at comparably low prices.

Not a tech expert by any means, but I find this rather hard to believe - seems like decent resolution to me!

Obviously, for €100 you're not getting a top-of-the-range product but it does seem well-specced for the price and looks like "good value" to me. My son will be using it exclusively for watching Youtube videos (children opening Christmas presents, Jack Septiceye, soccer goals etc.) and playing games. In reality, I will be pleasantly surprised if it lasts to next Christmas, I would certainly not be spending big money on a tablet for him!

Again, your son wouldn't be the obvious use case I'm referring to, I'm just saying in a general sense given that the standard for midrange phones now is 1080p I wouldn't personally consider a tablet that's twice the size unless it had at least that resolution. Your son will LOVE his xmas present and I don't mean to take away from that at all. I'm just saying that if you put that Alba next to a slightly higher spec you'd see a very noticeable difference in screen quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Dard23

For reading and text you will notice a difference beside any full HD tablet! For video not so much. Also for games it will run your Angry Birds, Clash of Clans type games perfectly. It will however struggle with Nova 3, Asphalt 8 types.

Picked one up this morning. Tried it out briefly. The screen isn't as sharp as my S6 or my ipad...... but I paid 99 blips and the boy will be happy...

Only thing is is that it's ginormous. .... its wider than an ipad but not as high. More of an "on the table" job I reckon.

I also picked one up for the wee lad, his birthday money, and we set it up last night. I think, for what it is, it's a great tablet. He was playing games, watching youtube, showbox etc, with no discernible problems. The colours on the screen seemed good. I could hear it downstairs so the speakers are good. Plenty of connectivity Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mini Hdmi. I think for €99 it fits the bill.

    Hi all

I just thought people may be interested to know that I returned my Alba 10" tablet to Argos in Drogheda today.

I bought the tablet a week ago and from the beginning it had some coloured lines across the screen, about 12 in all. They didn't have a replacement in stock so I got my €109.99 back. There was no issue in returning the product.

If they get stock back in I may purchase again at €99.99, not sure yet. Apart from the lines I was very happy with the tablet.

    Max
