I have a Nikon D3100 and I'm looking for a good all round lens. I was using the standard 55mm focal lens that came with the camera since I got it a few years ago but unfortunately it got broken and I'm left without any lens at the moment. Rather than getting the same lens again I'm looking for something with a longer focal length, nothing major maybe around the 100mm mark, obviously I don't want to be paying massive money, just a good all round lens really if there's such a thing. This nikkor 18-105mm one seems to be something that might suit me. I'm completely in the dark when it come to lens so any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Get some fixed focal lenght as You will be only lazy with zooms. That's my opinion

Superzooms are very handy but the rule of thumb is the longer the zoom difference the lower the quality. As above, if you get a prime lens (fixed lenth, no zoom) the quality of the glass, and photos you'll get is far far superior. It's massively get what you pay for with lenses, so that zoon for €250 is a very basic quality. Go for a 50mm or 35mm prime and you'll be amazed at the shots you'll get.

Saying that I had a Sigma 18-200mm years ago and very much liked it for its versatility. Think long term, get one really high quality lens that makes you think with your feet. Maybe go for a superzoom as a backup for travel etc

Only advice would be to have something like a standard UV filter on the end of whatever it is to prevent future scratches/breakages.

Before making any recommendations it would be handy to know how you plan to use your camera? What limitations did you find with the kit lens? How much do ypu want to spend? What is important to you?

There are many lenses out there and not one of them is perfect. They all have compromises, it just depends on which one will suit you.

Get used 50mm 1.8 which are cheap as fk, otherwise as the fella above me, get 35mm which is better in my opinion

That 18-105 is a fine lens for an amateur enthusiast. It's a great everyday lens. I wouldn't bother with a UV filter. It's a bit mad to put a cheap piece of glass in front of a lens costing a few hundred quid.

Don't be too seduced by long focal lengths. They seem sexy, but are of limited use for most people. I have a 55-200 that I love, but rarely use.

Ultra wide is far more interesting. My Sigma 10-20 is my favourite lens.

Cheers for the advice appreciate it, I suppose its just a general lens I'm after. I used the kit 55 lens happily for years but I need to replace it and figure I might as well get something a little more versatile, I am on a budget so I think the one I posted might be my best option. If anyone knows of any similar lens at a similar price range I'd really appreciate it.
