There is a button on the back of our AMIKO minicombo box marked "S/PDIF". What does that do or what is it for ?

It stands for Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format. It's basically a digital audio out port that can connect to an external A/V unit or amp to give you digital sound. Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS etc.
