Buying a car from north: when to leave a deposit

I'm considering buying a car from North for a dealer. The car has good history and the car check etc checks out clear.

The dealer will put it through MOT before collection.

However, he is asking for a deposit of 500£ GBP (the car is worn around 2K GBP) to take the car off the market and put it through MOT. He say obviously the sale would be dependant on acquiring MOT and if for any reason it doesn't get it he will return the deposit.

Does that sound Kosher? I would be inclined not accept leaving a deposit without seeing the car. Having said that I'm not a mechanic and there's very little I can see that MOT people can't, and if the history and MOT checks out I wouldn't be able to spot anything more unless I splash out on a mechanic.

Any thoughts / advice greatly appreciated!

    Fairly normal practice.

Deposit over the phone subject to the car being as described, etc.

but what if there is a dispute and he says the car IS as describe and I disagree.
    and is a 25% deposit normal? I wouldn't mind if it was a 100 or 200 ...

    You outlined everything yourself already.

Fresh MOT should find any mechanical flaw.
Ask him to tell you about any marks on the body, and maybe get pictures of same.

There shouldn't be any dispute on either side after that.

I don't know how you could consider buying a car without seeing and looking it over first.

My feeling is that if you can't make your way up to see it, buy something local instead. Surely with the sterling rate and then import your getting murdered. And it needs to be NCTd. Knowing it's going to Be exported straight away I'd wonder how good the MOT checks will be.

This sounds like it will end in another thread on "dealer said bodywork was good but car has scratch and now I can't get deposit back".

Normal practice. But I would give a Stg 100 deposit only. Good luck with the purchase.

Very high deposit in my opinion! I bought an 8000 pound car in the UK this year and the deposit was only 100 quid? 25% is madness!

The less the deposit the better....just went through the hell of buying a used car....garage was over an hour away 120 km round trip....this quickly gets a pain if you need to keep returning to get things fixed..... Stay local and check out your rights about paying a deposit on a car....personally I would ever again give any car dealer a cent of a deposit as you will have a hell of job getting it back even if your in the right. That's why they push for it, handy money for them if you change your mind.
