Engagement Ring Insurance

Hi guys, does anyone know where I could get insurance for the engagement ring as a stand alone policy? It seems everywhere will only include it on house insurance but we're renting so don't have it! I'm aware there are previous threads on this but they're years old so need up to date info.

    Thanks in advance!

You can get contents only home insurance if you're renting, so that'd be a way around that. I know that's what my SIL has with her rings. Some jewelers offer insurance, but it can sometimes be expensive. I think my SIL is paying €20 a month or so for her contents insurance, which includes her wedding and engagement rings listed on the policy, and also her husband's wedding ring.

Mine is included in our contents insurance as we also rent. Our policy is with the AA, and covers the ring outside the home also.

Contents insurance is a good idea. Even if you don't own the furniture or the building, you'd have a lot of stuff to replace if there was an accident!

We're with FBD for contents insurance. We've also insured all expensive electronics on it along with the jewellery.

Another vote for the contents insurance. I would assume the all the usual insurance companies offer such a product

Unfortunately they don't. There's some that don't do contents insurance, and those that do don't always insure items taken outside the home, or items over a certain value, so if you do have an expensive piece of jewellery, make sure it's fully covered with whoever you pick.

If it's any use, my insurance is with Liberty, it's contents only. I own my apartment, but because it's an apartment, you don't actually take out buildings insurance because that's covered in your block policy.

My policy has an 'unspecified all risks' cover for items up to €1500 which means that the likes of a laptop or camera or jewelry up to that value will be covered both inside and outside the home. However, I've got my wedding ring, my hubby's wedding ring, and a couple of other things that would be under that value, but I've still specified them on the policy to make sure they're covered. I've also got the engagement ring listed. I had to send in proof of purchase/value for anything that's listed. My SIL that I mentioned has her policy through Bank of Ireland, I think they're underwritten by RSA. I used to be with them but switched to Liberty because of cost.

From indirect experience, they really should be insured.

Also make sure to get good photos of the ring and a valuation piece of paper from a jewelers. Scan and email to self for safe-keeping. That makes any claim much easier.

A good valuation should include photos and description.

I think it's mad not to insure something that is so expensive for many people (unless you're making the really big bucks and really don't give a damn about the cost). I'd be more surprised if people wouldn't consider it.
