Postage stamp required on Santa letter ?

This is the lowest of the low as far as I'm concerned. A kid writes a letter to Santa and the PO are asking that they affix a 70 cent letter to it before they stick it in the special post box ????

I know the Post Office is losing money, but that's ridiculous

How do you expect it to get to the North Pole without a stamp?

In fairness, you can dump a letter without a stamp in any post box. The 70 cent gets a reply back to the child - post out and a reply all for a mere 70 cent.

The stamp is only required if you want a response

It's got a long way to go. 70 cent is good value for money.

Heard a great quote about it earlier: "This is institutional-level of lying!" I have to agree.. and wish I came up with that.

70 cent?? That is taking the piss to be fair, you'd be better off telling the little one that Santa isn't real, would save you the hassle.

    Actually no.

If you pay for the stamp, the child will receive a letter back from Santa.

You don't have to put a stamp on a letter that you put in a post box so that it doesn't get delivered to imagination land. What do you they're going to do? Send elves knocking on your door for the 70cent?

    Jaysis.

Nope they're not asking you to do that at all. But don't let facts get in the way of a good old rant.

You acknowledge that An Post is loss making, but you won't cover the cost of having a reply mailed back. Do you want anything else free with your order of ridiculousness?

We always sent them to Santa by means of the fireplace. The smoke carried the words to the North Pole (Smoke goes up you see) where the letters then recombined for reading purposes. Kinda like an old-school teleporter but just not as fast.

It never failed, I always got that surprise I asked for.

Pfft. Writing letters. What is this? The 1950's?

My kids will be tweeting links to their Pinterests on Snapchat (or something)

Us too! I have a parent from France and always assumed that' sphere it came from.
When I talk about it, no one else seems to have done this and everyone thinks we were so gullible to fall for it!
But I think the magic of this is nicer than just posting a letter, made perfect sense to me, and I always got the surprise I asked for, most times lovingly made by Santa's elves, who used to head to the workshop after all the kids had gone to bed ;)

Overreact much? 70c to cover a child getting a reply from Santa at Christmas?

Write the reply from Santa yourself if it's that important.

Guys whatever you do don't tell the OP about all the corruption, embezzlement, murder and child abuse that have been perpetrated by "respectable" institutions over the years. His head will explode!

70 cent only? Are you as tight as a duck's arse OP?

Are there cutbacks on the pocket money now?

And it's pure Scrooge if you make a child pay for the stamp on his letter to Santa himself.

Kids these days are too coddled. If I wanted seventy cent when I was a lad I'd have to do fourteen hours down th' pits making sure the air was safe before they sent down the canaries

Think you're all overlooking a major thing here, the North Pole is foreign mail, should be E1.00 not 70c :D:D:D

(And don't forget to put a return address on it, in case he's gone away or incomplete address:eek:)

    €1.05 actually.

On a related note I was in the airport on Saturday and there were three scheduled flights to the North Pole that morning. And saw two bus loads of little ones getting a Garda escort to catch one of the flights. The Make a Wish Foundation I assumed. Even an oft-times grinchy non-parent like myself smiled at that.

My own flight was cancelled. Just hope theirs got away all right

So the lowest of the low is An Post charging 70c for a letter from Santa hand delivered to your door, but it's ok to pass the expense to a 5 yr old.........

I thought An Post stopped that service years ago??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,373 ✭✭✭selous

No, still going, asked a postie today about it, he says any letter they get that has an address on it even if there's no stamp on it, gets a reply, even said there was a memo sent to offices that any Santa letters were not to be returned to sender, apparently one that was, made Joe Duffy some years back, oh to see that kids face:eek:

Aren't you lucky, we had no mineral deposits back in my day, we had to lure unsuspecting asteroids to the planet or there'd be no gold flakes in our goldschlager.

I think you could send it to any old address for a child and just reply yourself. Nothing beats them posting a letter and the excitement of the postman delivering a card in reply.

Why does the Air Mail rate not apply. Santa does live in the North Pole? Great value in my opinion.

We used to get a reply when I was little in the 80s and I don't remember ever putting a stamp on it. Santa used to say hi to everyone who'd written to him on the radio too.

Seriously, be careful with the stamps as my nephew one year got totally different presents than he had asked santa for. Was all Rap CDs and stuff like that and he's only 7. We figured it out why in the end though as we had mistakenly put a stamp on it for him that was 50c.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,500 ✭✭✭✭DEFTLEFTHAND

We used to bring our letters from Claus into school to show the teacher. Suspicions were raised at the time, as everybody seemed to have the exact same reply.

PLANET? You were lucky to have a planet.

We used to have to float in the void of space, holding our breath and hoping that we'd land somewhere with an atmosphere in time for us to 'ave our tea.

Land somewhere with an atmosphere? La de fookin da..

We were space dust, that had to form into an asteroid over billions of years before smashing into a planet..
