hi all

we are just about to start proceedings in buying an old stone farmhouse circa 1930s. it is in need of a total rip out & upgrade... also an extension on the back
we are looking to make it as eco/low energy as possible and would like to use various methods to do this.
insulation- hemp or sheeps wool
ground to water or air to water heating
water reclaim system
solar or wind power.

what I,m interested in finding out is
1. are these possible to install in this type of house?
2. are there government grants for these upgrades and if so how do we apply?
3. is there any stipulations regarding applying for these eg. living in the house for a time, being a resident in the country for a set period of time.(we are currently based in uk)

many thanks,
ivan

1. Yes of course, though the average builder won't be familiar and perhaps reducing your concrete requirements would be a better place to start reducing co2, also the reality of renovation/Extension costs will diminish your budget rapidly- Sheepswool/hemp are expensive(x5times+) in comparison to say itchy fibre glass for example.
2. Yes Http://www.seai.ie/Grants/
3. Check the above link for the particulars, I'd imagine once you're the owner you'll be eligible.
