Breaking the silence

I lived abroad for quite a while with a few lads that I knew from home. I learned out there that one of these lads is gay. It was a surprise but no big deal. But it is a HUGE deal to him. I was drunk last night and told it to a few of the lads. I deeply regret this and realise how stupid it was. The only reason I said it is because its not a big deal to me because I couldn't care less who is gay.The lad in question is most likely ashamed of himself and is living abroad because of this.

This could easily get back to his family.

Was what I done a very bad thing?

    Yes.

It was his secret. not yours, and you have broken his trust. If he wanted your friends to know he would have told them. You say you "learned he is gay", did he tell you or did you find out?

People handle their sexuality differently, for some it is no big deal, some people are nervous but ultimately get over it and some build it up to be something huge in their minds and turn it into a massive dirty secret never to be told.

I understand that there was no malice but if he is that ashamed of it then it doesn't really matter whether it's a big deal to you or not.

The people you told, how did they react? Were they indifferent or did they have a laugh about it? Will they likely spread it around, all it takes is one.
