Awww. I had a rottweiler called Bruno. It's a grand name.

    For a dog...

Why cant people just name their babies normal names these days?

People trying to out do each other with unique funky names, the only ones who suffer are the poor children.

Yeah it's more of a pet's name really. Have you considered alternatives? Benito perhaps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

There's an eyetalian lad in the canteen in work that I christened Bruno

I didn't mean it in an affectionate way "Bruno and his f***in half portions again"

So yeah, grand name for your kid

Have you considered that the Parenting forum may be better for more 'gentle' feedback?

Bruno is a brutal name. Give him a proper mans name.

I'm half Irish/Sicilian myself, my sons names are Louis & Santino...

Bruno e un buon nome italiano, mi piace ;)

    Depends on the surname.

    Bruno Senna - fine

Bruno Murphy - no no no

    St. Bruno.

Perfectly acceptable name for a boy.

The child's bloodline is half italian & Bruno is a reasonably common name in 'Lo Stivale'

You won't find too many Tadhg's in Italy FFS

Call him Carmine. Proper mafia name.

Mate of mine is called Bruno, he's Brazilian though, grand name, I don't see anything wrong with it, probably not all that common in Ireland though.

People really are dicks when it comes to this.

School teachers are the worst imo.
Fake assed irish names with more letters and fadas in them than a little. Or the really "cool" parents who name their child something like "fanajugoyu" because it's swahili for little star.
Fcuk away off out that will you...

+1. Often hear it at the school gate when I'm dropping off my 3 kids Apple Blossom, Shining star and Dave.

Yeah but when you're a teacher every name has a little sh1t you've taught attached to it so it's just easier to make one up.

I used to work with a guy who has a mate named Thor. Problem is that his surname is something typically Irish like Murphy or Kelly.

Makes a nice change from every second person you meet being called John Ryan though!

I'm speaking in general not this specific case.

Reminds me of the little kid in roald dahls witches movie. Look if you're asking for other people's advise on it then you're not convinced yourself TBH as someone who had a different name in Ireland but very common all throughout Europe I got no end of bullying at school from kids and teachers alike. Hence I gave my own daughter a nice normal easy to spell and pronounce name. Life is hard enough without the hassle of a crappy name to start off with too.

    Call him Sue.
    That'll toughen him up.

Would toughen him up & be good for him. Look at how well the boy named "Sue" in the famous song turned out.

Bruno is a Saint's name and everything.

    See here:

He's the patron saint of pipe smokers.

Nice name, though Germany and Rottweilers come to mind though when I hear it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

No problem with that name at all. It's nice for your kid to have a fairly unique name. Much better than Jack or any of the other "popular" names.

Go with something stronger like Fabio.

Did you get bullied much about your name in school? It doesn't toughen you up it destroys you as a small child. It alienates you and makes you very guarded and removed. That's the truth. And no amount of parents going in about it will stop it especially if the teachers indulge in making fun of your name in front of your whole class. This is what happened to me. Yes I toughened up around 16 but it destroyed me for years. Unless you've experienced this yourself you haven't a clue what a handicap a crappy name is. I take every opportunity to advise parents to be on name choices when asked. I'll even tell them what nicknames their kids will be teased with to give them perspective on the name that are thinking of.

Woah, easy there! I was joking, this is AH not PI. If you know the song I referenced the kid in it turns into an angry & bitter loner obsessed with getting revenge on his father.

My friend's son is called bruno. It suits him but he has good looks from his foreign parents. If he was a pasty irish kid I don't think it'd work.

    Hehe nice Witches reference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,544 ✭✭✭Samaris

Oddly enough, I think the child's looks would have some bearing on how well it's going to suit him. If he picks up the Italian looks, no-one's going to think twice about his name. If he's a red-headed pale Irish kid, as someone else commented, he's going to get no end of slagging about his name.

Friend of mine had a dog called Bruno, so I'm afraid that's all that comes to mind as regards the name in general.
