    Hi guys. I have a 2000 Mitsibishi Lancer 1.3 petrol, recently I have noticed that the car when started from cold chugs like a tractor until it warms up, if I try to drive it when I start the engine it will chug and not accelerate fully, but this only happens if I am trying to drive up a hill, if I am starting off on the flat it will chug but still move until the engine is warm enough then it will drive as normal. If I drive through water on the road it will start to chug again for a short period and then return to normal, I have changed the air filter but problem keeps reoccurring, any ideas?? Thanks in advance. :)

    The exhaust needs attention too, wondering where to draw the line spending money on it to be honest!!

    I had something similar on an old Corsa once. It was some lead that was worn or rusted and the dampness was getting into it. It was an easy fix. It was a long time ago so can't remember the details

    Try changing the distributor cap and rotor. They do get worn and if the cap is cracked or broken moisture will get in causing similar symptoms to the ones you described.

    Maybe check the plugs as well, I've a lancer and they were in poor order when I bought them. Car was sluggish at idle and eventually croaked. New plugs sorted it

    I had a problem with a car once too, not quite sure what it was or what caused it, but something fixed it in the end.

    OP:
    the most likely, but not definite, cause is one of the below chain (most likely the distributor, but might as well check the others);

    Distributor > leads > spark plugs

    Plug leads are easy to check, see the below diagram, if that isn't the cure, have someone / yourself check the distributor cap and that there's no water ingress (there probably is) might as well get new spark plugs if you need a new cap, fairly cheap items & easy fit.

    Could be the coolant temp sensor giving a faulty reading and either under or over fuelling the engine.

    Distributor? On a car from 2000 with fuel injection?

    Are you getting your distributor and carburettor mixed up? ;)

    Absolutely not George, I know a lot of the earliest (mass produced) fuel injected cars had them, I thought they'd all disappeared by 2000 though.
