My Garmin threw a fit today. There was condensation under the screen and it stopped working altogether.

    Pain.

What's the logical replacement? - 510 is defunct already apparently, but the 520 is feckin dear :(. With Christmas coming I haven't exactly got 300 euro falling out of my pocket.

Are there any other alternatives, or any super dee duper deals on the 520?

There's usually one or two garmins on our adverts forum.

Stuff it into a bag of rice and pop in the hot press for a while, supposed to extract moisture out of it.

    What about another 500?

After shopping around last year, I found Handtec had slightly better prices than the rest of the crop, and sometimes offer refurbs at a decent discount. Probably better waiting until after Christmas and seeing if you can pick up a bargain in the sales.

I guess it depends on your actual budget. You can get a replacement 500 for €160 on Wiggle. For another €110 on top of that you can get a 520.

It would be worth opening a support request with Garmin. They have one of the best support processes I've ever seen - they'll quote you a cost for sending the unit back to them for a repair and if they can't fix it, they'll send you back a new/refurb with a 90 day warranty for the same cost. Should be €100 or less.

I had the same thing happen to my Edge 500 a few years ago. About five months after I bought it, I went for a spin in heavy rain and I think the rubber thing covering the usb port had come off. It started doing funny things and then died. Garmin gave me a new unit. Not sure if the ops unit is still under warranty but no harm at least asking Gamrin if they can do something.

Same here, they took my 500 and replaced it for 60euro.

They will tell you its out of warranty but they can do a replacement service, and I think they offer upgrades at well below cost price.

Might try the Garmin replacement / upgrade route. An upgrade would be nice cos I've been very very generously gifted a set of vector 2's for my birthday.

Are there any competitors to the Garmin monopoly? What about these Bryton Riders - are they any use, or Polar? What's their 520 equivalent?

Ray Maker is a good place to get some info on that - there's not much on Bryton but he does have reviews of Polar. His recent shortlist mentions the Garmin 520, Polar M450, and Wahoo RFLKT+.

There's a handy comparison tool, too.
