Does anyone know the answer to this tax query?

If you are unemployed in 2015 and go back to employment in 2016 you don't absolutely need a P45 as you had no income in 2016.

If you were self employed in 2015 and go back to employment in 2016 is it the same process?

You go into your new job in 2016, give your PPS number and say I haven't been employed in this year asking them to contact Revenue and get a tax credit certificate on your behalf??

    Anyone know the answer. :)

    Pretty much.

I'd be inclined to ask the employer for their registration number, and ring Revenue with it myself rather than relying on HR to do it.

That also gives a chance to clear up any confusion re your self-employment status.

You will also need to deregister as self employed with Revenue otherwise you will still be required to file income tax returns.
