Has anyone bought the space saver spare wheel for Nissan leaf from any car breakers? 1 Nissan dealer quoted me 190e!! Others didn't have a clue. So many space saver wheels on eBay & done deal.
Mine is the 2014 sv leaf with 205 55 r16 tyre, will any space saver wheel of that dimension fit for the Nissan leaf? Can the spare wheel be clamped or locked in the boot? Am thinking to buy one & just keep it in the boot itself. Your opinions please

Spacesaver for the Mitsubishi Lancer 2008-2014 should work too.

I wouldn't bother, leaf comes with tyre kit that should get you home.

I haven't had a flat in years ? down to luck or modern tyres ?

Luck... I've had flats on both the i3 and the leaf. One of which the tire repair kit was useless for as the sidewall failed.

The tire repair kit ruins the tire and you have to pay for a full replacement instead of a €5-20 repair.

    5-20 euro for a new tyre ?

don't forget you will need a suitable jack as well - there is no obvious jacking point on the leaf from what I could see..

Leaf has a standard still construction that you can lift using normal scissor jack.

Most tires can repaired. Unless the structure of the tire has been severely compromised it's a quick and cheap repair. File the puncture, pop in a rubber plug and trim it. 5 minute job.

Believe it or not there is a bolt hole and space to mount a spacesaver wheel under the Leaf, without using boot space. It's a legal requirement to have a real spare in some markets, you can buy the bracket and official spacesaver for about €300 on fleabay.

I got a mitsubishi lancer GS3 spacesaver instead for €90. My dad doesn't mind the loss of space in the boot.

I thought you meant new tyre, I just re-read your post lol.

The beauty about the leaf is the TPS which will inform you if you got a flat, or rather loosing pressure. Leaf spy is great because it tells you the pressure in each wheel.

Sometimes it can be hard to tell if you got a flat and the damage is done by the time you stop meaning you need a new Tyre.

agree most instant tyre repair kist do nothing of the sort and completely ruin the tyre , thats been my experience , dont touch them anymore

I've used holtz tyre weld on my Mini which doesn't have run Flats any more. Still had a slow puncture so i got the tyre repaired with no issue. They just washed out the gunk and repaired as usual. The majority of tyre repair products are water soluble and just wash out.

Any tyre company that says other wise is just trying to flog you out of a new tyre.

Try a car dismantlers/recyclers. lots of these around. for LEAF a 5 stud jap spacesaver should fit. cost 10-50 quid. plus you need a jack. The space saver will just sit in your boot, takes up a small bit of space.

I got a space saver Lancer tyre on eBay for mine.

Never actually tried it on though...

Have myself a spacer. Just wondering how people secured it in the boot.

I can't believe it doesn't come with even the bracket to secure the tyre. I wonder would mounting the tyre under the car affect the aerodynamics and also the range.

I think that's roughly where the official spare mounts.

When buying a space saver for a Leaf (cause I have a puncture right now and would have appreciated a spare!) what dimensions do you need to look for.

Example... Tyre dimensions are listed as, for instance, 115/70 R15.
I know the 115 doesnt matter as thats the width.
Do I have to match the 70 and the R15 with my existing tyres?

I have the factory 215/50 R17 on the car.

EDIT: Just looked at the manual and it lists this space saver tyre size regardless of whether you have a 16 or 17 inch wheel on the car: T125/90D 16 98M
So I presume you dont have to match the dimensions.

EDIT: Answering my own question!... found an online tyre size calculator... The 16" wheels on the Leaf are 205/55R16 and the 17" are 215/50R17. They both equate to almost (0.2 of an inch) the same diameter hence the reason why the one 16" space saver works for both. So, time to look for a T125/90D 16 now!

Rather than start a new thread, am posting here:
Is there a specific jack for the Leaf, I am scrapping my car so can keep the jack from it....
    Is there a jacking point?
    Thanks

Its the number one management task today!

I was on the Oz forum last night, if I read it correctly, they all must be sold with spares

That could be local Oz rules, bit of a big country so maybe they don't want folk stranded!

If you take a look under the boot there is actually space under there to hold it. Its the law in Oz. I presume no spare in the outback is a no no, not that you'd be taking a Leaf to the outback but anyway thats the law.

FYI: For anyone else that cares, I'm after ordering a s/h full size wheel on ebay as I didnt want a space saver. I wanted a wheel that I could swap and drive normally and then fix the puncture in my own time. I wouldnt plan to carry the space saver around 24/7 so the full size wheel is a better option in that case. If I get a puncture while local I can just call on the other half to bring it to me. If I'm doing a longer journey I can throw it in.

Once I confirm that the wheel I've bought actually fits (which I'm fairly sure it will) I will post the details. Its from ebay and there are 3 more available!

That makes a lot of sense because I gather, perhaps wrongly, that some of the OEM spares will not fit on the front.....due to the brake callipers....

In passing, anyone get wheel locks? because the more folk look for spare wheels.....join the dots...!

Yes I meant locking wheel nuts, don't think mine has.

    Anyway for reference:
    Coming from Nissan:
    a new space-saver...steel...rim...and space-saver tyre is 182.04 inc VAT
a new ....full size.....STEEL rim...and.......full-size tyre is 259.00 inc VAT

Thanks, the above was just to let folk know what the back marker is: in addition there is some ? mark about whether the OEM spares will fi the front of the leaf, I know its not recommended, but not actually fitting is another layer of hurt!

I am on my way to some breakers now

I am on my way to some breakers now

There are a few Leaf's scrapped and they wouldnt sell me one wheel.... 4 only.

Since the Leaf doesnt have a spare they would probably sell them quicker as single wheels and make more money too!

I also put in a request for a space saver on partfinder.ie, which every breaker gets notified on, and didnt get a hit.

The trick is finding a non-Leaf wheel that fits. Hopefully the one I found on ebay does the trick.

    I have a 141 Leaf Acenta.

As regards the front, is there some sort of differentiation? It's the first reference I've heard to same. The wheel is a 16" - my understanding is that any Lancer compact would do the job - within the range of 2008-2014.

The Lancer space saver is popular, but I think they are hard to find.

I went for a Mazda 3 space saver, it fits the front, and the wheel nuts fit fine too.

I was reading on the OZ site last night that some bloke had a spare which rubbed off the brake callipers when put on the front: I don't know...With cars once I figure out the front from back am all done knowledge wise.!

Are they full sized wheels? Is it not in your interests to get compacts - and try and maintain as much boot space as possible?

It depends if you intend to carry it around all the time.

I will only bring it on country trips at night when the garages might be closed.

That is a burning question alright, I just don't know yet, I don't mind losing a bit of boot space with a full wheel I suppose but there's also the weight factor.
To date we've always used full wheels in our cars so when a puncture arose, just a quick call to breakdown and everything taken care of without a rush to get the puncture fixed...
I wonder is there that much dimensional and weight difference between a full and a space saver?

Space saver is 125 wide. Full wheel is 205(16" wheels) or 215(17" wheels).

I dont know about the weight but I'd say there isnt much in the difference as the full size wheels are alloys which tend to be light and the space saver is steel. I dont think the weight difference would have any noticeable affect on range.

The space they take up in the boot is the issue really. Even a space saver is going to be bulky and awkward in the boot.

My theory is get the full size wheel and leave it at home. When I get a puncture deal with the hassle of getting it delivered to me. Thats a sacrifice I'm willing to make in the hope it wont be a regular thing! If Im on a longer journey, throw it in and deal with the loss of space.

There is no perfect answer really. Its whatever suits you.

In an SVE/tekna the spacesaver is roughly as high as the subwoofer so you can put a nice false floor on top of it and it's all even.

I've done that. False floor with compartments for cables, extension lead etc. Very tidy job. I think I might have posted that here.
