Hi all. I had a heifer that calved a bull calf january 2014. He weighed over 400kg when he was sold as a weanling that october. (9months old)
I noticed on the icbf a few weeks back that he was down as just weighing 260kg when he was sold. This was niggling at me 1.because i was a bit chuffed with what he weighed when sold and being of a first timer and all and 2. I was wondering down the line will it effect its mothers star rating (her progenys performance, euro value per progeny etc). My thinking was that it Wouldnt look great for its dam if she weaned a 9month old weanling at just 260kg.
So I rang up icbf. They said the mart had given them the wrong info and what harm it'll look good for the next farmer who bought him. I taught flip that, he was a great weanling when he left here and made the most out of all my weanlings last year. Anyway eventually after probably annoying the arse off them the man i got on to in icbf got onto someone else and they agreed it probably would affect things down the line for his dam when she produces a more calves. so they got onto the mart and got the weight changed(i had to send a photocopy of mart receipt) i know it wont change anything for now but its just because shes a young cow, extremely docile and a great size. she was a 4* in the 2013 suckler cow report and last year went down to a 3*. I'm hoping she'll come back up to a 4* eventually. Just wondering what do people think. Am i making a mountain out of a mole hill or would it ever really effect this cows star ratings and her heifer calves down the line? I've had cows that their stars have gone up and some their stars have come down this year. I'm trying to use all 5* ai bulls but I don't really know how this star rating works sometimes!

Would it enstill much faith in you when ICBF are allegedly coming out with 'does it really matter' lark? Farmers are dubious enough about the whole 'stars' thing without errors being brushed aside.

Yes. I have a 5* cow that was bred to GWO last year. According to icbf This calf is a 4* which im now keeping as a replacement for this scheme.
Ive kept another heifer from this cow who had her first calf this year but icbf have only rated her as 1*. I dont understand!

Now i know different sires and that but i cant understand how there's such a difference in her progeny's stars when the mother is 5* cow herself

I can't see how you could get a 4* heifer off GWO since he is only a 2* bull within and across breeds on the maternal index.

What bull is her other heifer calf off?

I have two 4* from him. Mothers are €140 plus his is €51 so add both and divide by two puts my two at €85 which is in the 4* band.

Serious heifers with great width so should calve anything. I don't really understand why linear isn't taken into account.

Or maybe it is but the other way to breed smaller cattle....

I think if memory serves me right he was 4* before the autumn report came out this year.
Her other heifer was by don juan (jdu).

You are 100% right to do what you did. Makes a bit of a mockery of the whole thing if ICBF can't even be bothered to update records properly.

Ya just checked 2014/2015 P.G catalogue there. Gringo was 4* replacement and 5* terminal.

Felt like maybe i didnt really need to press them on it so much saying as it wont do much for now but on otherhand it was really beginning to annoy me every time i looked at it.

Yes i found gringo's offspring to be very good. Very consistant and grow very well. all mine were calved on their own. Just the right size.
