Hi, im thinking of moving from Sky to Eir as my Sky costs have ...yet again...gone up! for my sky alone its like 98Euro.

Eir seem to have a good package which is alot cheaper and includes my broadband etc in the price which is even lower price that sky tv alone

but im wondering if anyone that has the Eir tv package could answer

    Is it good?
    Reliable?
    Different from Sky? how?
Can i record something in 5/six days time
    Series link record?

    Any info would be appreciated,
    Cheers

It would be like going from a petrol car to an electric one, similar but in no way the same.

Can you give us a breakdown of what you are getting for €98

Just be careful with regards to Eir as their packages are cheap for the first 3 or 4 months and then they rocket in price. You are tied into a 18 month contract also.

    See my post here

In short, I'd advise against it myself. If you're over 12 months with Sky you can cancel (or threaten to) and then they'll likely make you an offer to stay or you can go through with the cancellation and sign up in your partner's name for new customer discounts if applicable.

Also see the thread on Bargain Alerts here - last few pages will give you the latest offers and experiences of others in the same situation.

I ditched sky about a year ago for eir.
Apart for one or two glitches, I am happy with it.
Yes, you can series link, record two channels at the same time and it also has a 7 day epg. I still use my old sky box or saorview if I want to view a third channel while recording two others. I won't be going back to sky particularly as they were so obnoxious when I tried to cancel

I have the full sky pack, sports, movies, hd, documentaries and kids. But according to sir their pack for all including broadband was I think 65 for 12 months then 105 after which sounds pretty good.
I called sky, best they said they found do was for everything 109 for as is tv pack plus broadband for 6 months then it goes up over 150 again

The problem here is that Eir will not have Sky sports or movies included in the figure you quoted. Nor will HD and the documentaries / wildlife channels be include. But you can add them although Im not sure what they cost. With Eir you will also be tied to a new 18 month contract whereas with Sky it will be 31 days...Im assuming you are out of contract as you intend leaving.

All I can do is tell you to compare like with like in order to get a clearer picture of where the best value can be found. You could also consider starting a thread in the Sky Talk To forum stating how disappointed you are at the derisory offer they made to keep you as a customer. They have a good team there and most likely they will ask you to PM your details and they will call you and the chances are they will make an improved offer.

i personally think sky have the best system available today even though i havent been a customer for years. their technology is rock solid compared to the competition. i guess you get what you pay for. sky is expensive though. if push came to shove, id chose an alternative viewing option over any of the providers. do some research op and best of luck with it

A third option would be ditch SKY/Virgin/Eir and go Freesat + Netflix

The basics channels are free, and a freesat box means series link. Irish channels need a different box unless you go you've to do some setup on.

It really depends on what other channels you consider so unmissable you are prepared to pay over the odds for them. That's the only channels you've to pay for. Netflix is pretty much a no-brainerto keeps some younglings happy.

Then again you have sports so you're going to have to fork out for that

There are none of the basic Sky channels - Sky1, Sky Living, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts, Sky News, etc.) available.

Sky Sports sub is Sky Sports 1 to 5 only, no Sky Sports News or Sky Sports F1. No HD option available.

Sky Movies has all of the available channels there alright. No HD option available though.

If you don't rely on any of those missing channels then happy days but just bear in mind when you are ordering that the Eir service is a very cut down offering compared to Sky and there a sizable number of channels not on the Eir service.

I have sky and yes they are expensive but I think worth it. A friend of mine changed a while ago to upc and never stopped giving out about it. She missed sky exclusive channels and ended up going back. I suppose it depends on what you are watching mostly. I love the shows on Sky Atlantic probably my favourite channel.

If all you need some SKY and you have broadband there is the option of NowTV maybe ask a relative in the UK to buy you one as a christmas pressie ?

    More details here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=97961820

There's a lot of free TV out there if you mix and match.
With a subscription all you are paying for are the top-up channels and the convenience of a single remote. In the case of my FreeSat box I've a single remote that does my TV too but I have to press a few buttons to switch to/from Saroview. And you can buy a lot of DVD's for what you are paying for the subscription.

As always check your favourite non-FTA shows against Amazon Prime , Netflix and itunes , not sure if blinkbox works here. If you had satellite you can forget about Aertv.ie as it's mostly FTA stuff, but maybe in the future ?

I cancelled sky and moved to Eir TV with a free 12 months usage and then 6 paid.
When sky called 2 weeks later to offer me 6 months free I jumped at it.
I moved back to using Eir but it was so bad I bit the bullet and paid for sky and Eir ( €10 pm) for 6 months before I dumped it at the end of my contract.

I just renewed with phone and broadband.

Just looked at the eir TV package, wow. Most of their channels are free to air and they are charging an extra €5 a month for 5 or 6 hd channels which are FTA anyway. For anyone thinking of moving from sky just take the card out of your sky box and you will probably have more channels than eir, you just won't have to pay for them.
