Lego Death Star - recommendations

    Hi all,

I'd really love to pick up the Death Star but can't justify shelling out €400 on Lego (well not to my OH at least ;)

    Current prices;

    €436,99 - Lego Website
    €399,99 - Smyths

Is there any chance that the Lego site will reduce the price after Xmas or should I hold out for a Smyths offer - what do I doooooo??????

Forget about Lego.com anyway. Their idea of generous might be 5% off, or double VIP points. And I'd be fairly sure that the set will disappear before those show up again. Smyths is probably you're best bet. Again, assuming they've stock. The Death Stars demise has been predicted a few times (people we're sure it was finished only a few weeks ago) and it's still seems to be in production. I'd guess that's the final run of it though.

There is a rumour of an updated version of the set for this year that'll be much more expensive.

If you just want the deathstar, you could go the long way round and download the instructions and slowly collect the parts from places like ebay and bricklink. Some people sell quite a lot of lego for dirt cheap as kids have grown out of it, so large quantities can be got cheaply, and then you can buy any specialist parts on bricklink or other sites.

    Instructions are here

    List of pieces needed

Smyths would be your best bet when they have their next 20% off sale. but that may not happen for a long time. the best you'll get from lego.com will be double VIP points which is about 10% off, but that's given as point which come off your next order, so a little useless you plan to buy more from them.

Keep an eye on Adverts are they appear on their from time to time.

Not really relevant to the Ops question but there was a light hearted article in the style supplement of the Sunday times a couple of weeks ago on building this.your man nearly had a nervous breakdown by the end of it!

I'd be extremely surprised if you could bricklink it cheaper than retail.

Was going to say the same, it almost never works out cheaper to Bricklink a set that is already in production.

@OP I think second hand might be your best bet, but even then I wouldn't expect a huge drop on the retail price.

I didn't say bricklink the whole thing. I said use bricklink for any specialist or hard to find pieces. If you look at the parts list, most of the parts are fairly common.

People use the term brick linking when putting together a set from pieces. Even if they don't use that site.

I bricklinked a Cafe Corner this year and over 50% of the cost was probably for less than 5% of the bricks. It'd been more if I had been 100% accurate with the parts. The whole thing cost well over 500 euro for what was original a 150 euro set. Now Lego Death Star has an abundance massively prolific grey but you'll still spend a fortune in time, money and especially shipping getting even those. And with bulk buying other sets you're paying for what you don't need. Parents selling on eBay or done deal are not going to be cheaper than BL for the large quantities of the common stuff you need when you cost it properly.

there is a death star on ads. sealed.
reckon you will get it for about 350.
search it. excellent seller, I've bought off him before.

I'd second that, excellent seller. It'll cost you more to bricklink it and you won't have the same resale value, only Death Star on adverts, won't take you long to find him. ; )

thanks for all the responses guys, I've put in an offer of €340, will see how it goes

(would never have the patience to order all the pieces one by one!)

I actually might have one sealed for sale at a lower price than Smyths or Legoshop. I sent you a PM. :)

I'm not really into the Star Wars Lego, but the Death Star has always come across as very appealing to me. But my dilemma is where would I store the thing? I've very limited space as it is.

I'd have to create the space for it. Move over, other pieces!!:D

I have the same problem with this and a (bricklinked) UCS MF.

I got an acrylic display case made for the DS, considering getting one for the MF.

The rumours of an updated DS are getting more credible. Reports of a set number are just surfacing. Again, the rumour has it being a lot more expensive. I wish it was the Falcon, but I'm guessing it's just a matter of time before we see that. I'm sure we'll see a lot more updated classic sets from now on.

Another on adverts if you are still interested.

Has the set been discontinued? I see it's sold out on Lego with no indication of when it will be back in stock.

Do you remember when the Death Star was on sale in Smyths for €270? I have one built from the day it was available from LEGO.com (and made a fun stop-motion video with it, search my username on YouTube if you'd like to see it ;)), but I had to buy a second one at that price. :)

Apparently there is a new Death Star due this year. More expensive and presumably more pieces.

    I'd love a UCS Snowspeeder.

    Hello,
Sorry for bringing an old thread back up but does anybody know where I can buy the lego death star? Can't find anywhere online to buy it.

It's discontinued, so resellers on eBay, bricklink would be your best bet. However I wouldn't bother as An updated version is expected later this year.

Thanks Oafley Jones. I think I'll hold off and get the new one! Hopefully it will be out this year!

Any news on the new one yet? I'm hoping it's a display piece rather than a playset like the last one.

People sell that Death Star on Adverts every now and then but it's gotten expensive since being discontinued.

I hope the new set is good. I've heard so many possibilities of what it could be that I've stopped trying to guess. My favourite out of all the 'rumours' was a Trench Run vignette. I'd gladly shell out a few hundred for something that good. A repeat of the last one or the abomination of the 10143 Death Star II model would be a miss for me.

Not sure I'll be getting my hopes up after the recent "assault on hoth" ucs set. Its good and all but nowhere near what I was expecting. I could see the new deathstar being a rehash set (like the falcon and many others) but with a host of updated figs.

Probably just end up with a partially completed one to fit in with the new film.

    that's episode III

The new death star is rumoured to be based on the Force Awakens starkiller base.

The UCS hoth set has been heavily criticised - the latest star wars lego is crap compared to the older sets.

More rumours about the new DS have surfaced on Eurobricks this week. It's rumoured to cost $499 and has 28 minifigs. It's supposed to have close to 5000 pieces and is rumoured to be the biggest set Lego has released.

Again to clarify these are rumoured leaks appearing on Eurobricks this weekend.

But the next new film is episode 3.75 so just before it is finished for episode 4.

Don't think I'd call a Force Awakens base a Death Star set. The weapon may have increased in size from a small moon to planet sized and be doing a similar thing to blow stuff up, but Star Killer base is not a Death Star.
