I cancelled it recently (and even coughed up the early termination fee to do so) as I found it was just awful :( The box frequently complained about not being connected to the registered broadband (it was!), the EPG was useless as a planner and navigation was slow and unintuitive, and the box tended to get very hot as well. Picture quality wasn't great either and the customer care was poor (things that were agreed not being done etc).

These shortcomings were made even more obvious by the Sky box that I had connected to the satellite dish the previous tenant helpfully left. In the end I cancelled the evision TV (and home phone seeing as I haven't even had a landline handset in over a decade) and renegotiated a deal on the fibre (which is excellent to be fair), and got a deal with Sky for the rest.

I've stuck with it from the start: it's grand, no major problems. Everything works. It depends on what you want out of a TV service, really. It lacks fancy bells and whistles but it's cheap.

that's exactly what I want once it does the job don't care about lack of this and lack of that in the first year going to save a bundle load of money just has to be done at the moment

just going to dip back in here.

I had evision originally back in july 2014 on a 6 month trial and gave it up in January 2015.

Anyway my 18 month contract expired at the end of last month and I got call from eir. Anyway I wasn't pushed on getting the tv as I have saorview and freesat and quiet happy with that.

Anyway I was offered e vision free for 12 months of an 18 month contract and was then given €70 credit on my account which kind of covers the 6 months I have to pay for. One of the reasons I went for it was that I could add half price sky sports and movies for 12 months.

so my bill will be phone broadband tv (sports/movies) for €76.50. Happy with that.

a plus for the evision is that TV3 and TG4 come as standard in HD. a disadvantage is that neither sky sports or movies are available in HD.

I have UPC broadband and phone and sky for TV basic pack, Eir are offering me in a 24 month contract TV, Broadband, Phone and mobile phone with free smart phone, 25 euro for the first 12 months and 92 euro for the last 12 months, I'm very tempted by this offer, how good or bad is the TV and for me the broadband speed is very important, I currently get up to 250 megs, it averages out about 200. Will the Eir broadband speed match that?

Eir gives a max of 100 mb....fastest I have seen is 70mb....tv takes approx 10mb per box....anyone I have seen that got it soon ditched it....personally cant see it been good for some time yet.

Eir speed at the moment is mx 100mb. I get about 92 but I'm not far from the cabinet. I also have eir tv and have had it for about 18 months now. I'm not one to watch a lot of TV and it's mainly for the wife but to be honest I find it absolutely fine. I've no complaints or issues with it at all.

On the broadband speed side of things I think there is one element that most people tend to forget. Most access the net over WiFi and (pending on your router) most routers that are supplied give you a max of 54mb. So if you have a 250mb pipe, on your phone, tablet, laptop etc... you're not going to get anything faster than 54mb as that's the wifi limit. If you are hardwired that's a different story but how many people honestly hardwire a device other than a TV box to the broadband anymore.

Also if you are a netflix user and thinking of getting in Virgin maybe have a look around the net at some of the case against.

Not true, Eir supply the F2000 router which is a modern 802.11ac model. It should be easily capable of 200Mb/s over 5GHz 802.11n (in the same room) and 300Mb/s+ over 5Ghz 802.11ac

Of course that is dependent on your device (smartphone, laptop, etc.) supporting those higher speed specifications and older, cheaper devices tend not to. But it certainly isn't true that you are limited to only 54Mb/s.

I get 200Mb/s from my 240Mb/s Virgin connection over wifi from my Mac (5Ghz 802.11n).

You said most. Both Eir and Virgin, the largest ISP's in Ireland with about 70% of the market, supply 802.11ac routers capable of way more then 100Mb/s as standard. That certainly isn't most, quiet the opposite.

Vodafone and Sky routers are only 802.11n, but with a decent client device you should be able to easily push over 100Mb/s with them still.

I can get 200Mb/s using 802.11n with my Macbook Air!

54Mb/s was the limit of 802.11g, which was widely replaced for more then 5 years now.

Sure some people might still have old 802.11g devices, thus limiting their speed. But that certainly isn't the norm, nor is it the ISP's fault.

I signed up for the 42 a month quad deal in February
After something in the region of 20hrs on calls ( most of it on hold ) I finally got rid of Eir and managed to have them delete me as a customer and my bills quashed.

ALl that is left is the horrid black cable the butcher they sent to install draped across the front of our house.

Never ever ever ever ever again !

Had evision , free for 12 months and a tenner for 6 months.
Ditched it after a few weeks and went back to sky for free for 9 months. Went back to evision as I was soon to be paying for it anyway and ended up going back to sky and paying for it along with evision.
I'm still with eir on another contract but dumped evision.

Got b/band 100mb, landline, mobile for 35/m for 12 months and then 50 for 6 months.
    Sky is costing 24/month.

Well, not really true now BK. More than 50% of Eirs base is ADSL last time I checked which only get D1000s and Virgin only supply the COMPAL to the 360Mb product so realistically the number of households with an AC gateway will be significantly in the minority.

You could do a SHODAN scan if you wanted to test the theory.

Evision is crippled by the default use of homeplugs. Homeplugs are great when they work, but when your hoover kills your TV service its just not a good idea. Sky go to the effort of installing cabling as needed properly for new premises, eir skimp and use homeplugs then when it goes wrong messily run a CAT5e cable tacked to the fireplace etc that looks horrid. Makes it possible to offer it free to try and gain market share but ends up with a bad PR mess. Also Netgem were a terrible(probably cheapest) choice.

does this have catch up like UPC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭jdelis

Just got the service a few days ago, so my opinion about it is far from complete. Two major problems I see so far, which are facts:

    1. You can only watch/record only two channels in total at the same time. This is very low for today's standards.
    2. There is no option to get Sky Sports or Movies in HD, even with extra cost. I see little point in paying a price for premium content and not being able to get it in decent quality.

There are more (like no catch up service ie.) but I consider that the two above make this product much less competitive. The first has to do with the platform used and if it can be improved in the future. The second is about rights deals more or less. I was attracted by the very good starting price, but if the above issues will not be addressed in the future, I don't see me staying for long.

Can't express opinion about performance, reliability etc, as it is too early yet.

Just wondering how is evison these days ? Is the box bug free ? Has catch up been added ? Can you still only record two channels at one time ?

I've had it free for the last year as part of my phone BB package.

    No bugs
    No catch up
    Yes

Thanks for the update. I'm with Vodafone TV and I have to say it's excellent, very slick box, EPG, very fast channel changing and it has a catch up of sorts, as in you can rewind the EPG seven days, but only on some channels. However, my contract is up with them later this year, so I'm doing some early shopping around. I was thinking of switching to eir vision as the one big disadvantage of Vodafone, is that there is no HD on TV3, TG4, Be3, BBC2 and Discovery, all of which are in HD on eir vision, also the free addition of the eir sport and BT Sport channels in HD, is a big draw also. But when I look over on the eir community forum, eir vision gets a right hammering, so I'm quite doubtful, but it's good to hear from someone who has first hand experience of it.

My main set up os free to air so having the evision has been fine - if switching you can push to get the tv free for 12 of the18 months plus o took up the offer of half price sky sports and movies for 12 months. Having the bt pack is a nice bonus plus I have a sky box in another room which has just fta and I have the bt on that.

So the next 6 months will cost me an extra €15 for the tv but as you mentioned having tg4 on hd is nice for the gaa and rugby

my 18 contract with eir expired over the weekend and to keep the existing package of BB, phone and tv I was offered a discount of €8.50 pm for 18 months.

I declined and got the tv removed from my package - reducing the bill to €70. going to shop around for offers elsewhere.

    Anyway update

With the tv off for two weeks I got a new deal for phone BB and tv

    6 months at €50
    6 months at €70
    6 months at €85

    works out at €68 average

essentially it is tv free for 12 months a saving of €180 plus €20 credit per month x 6

what I did was when my contract expired on the 8th of august I rang to cancel the TV element and said I was shopping around.

I left it for a week till the 14th and got on live chat saying I had seen an offer for 12 months free TV - and got resigned up new contract.
