    Hi, Boards,

As a 21 year old who has no idea how to drive, and wishes to rectify that. How much should I be expecting to spend on everything from the very start all the way to getting my license and insurance, of course I'm not expecting exact figures, but if any of you remember how much your lessons, exams or your first insurance quote cost it would be a great help!

From what I've looked into it for me self, about €600—750. There abouts anyway, that could include the actual test for the full licence.
Insurance wise your best of ringing around, to many personal variables to give you an accurate idea of how much you'll be quoted.
Expect it to be a fair whack though due your age and just starting. I guess maybe around the 2k mark if you're Dublin based(pure guess)

Cool, thanks very much for the reply! Better start saving I suppose!

It'll be easily €600 for the eye test, theory, mandatory hours of lessons, and maybe more the rest. Is quite expensive these days unfortunately. Get it done as soon as possible, it'll reduce costs quicker, and save you money in the long run. Opens up options for employment as well if your stuck.

Once somebody gets you comfortable in a car, you'll wonder why you should where worried.
Take yer time, you'll be fine.

    Eye test 30
    Theory test 45
    Learners permit 35
12 EDT lessons 300-400 depending on instructor
    Driving test 85
    Full licence 55.

The whole process of getting a licence costs around 550-650 including 12 lessons.

thats min spend, alot of people won't pass after the bare min of 12 EDT lessons. I'd add another 200 onto that at least, plus if you need to hire your instructors car for the test most charge about 100 for this (but that includes an hours lesson before). Good luck

Most people do practice driving in between their 12 EDT lessons. It is not unheard of to pass your test after only doing 12 lessons, but it is unlikely. If you have access to a car that you can do your practice driving in, that will keep the over all cost down considerably. If you have to pay an instructor for more lessons (over and above the 12 mandatory ones) then that will drive up the cost considerably. The person who lets you use their car to practice driving in, will have to pay to add a learner driver to their insurance policy. That could be anything really. They'd have to call up their insurance company to get an exact quote. That is what most learners do to keep the overall costs down. If you buy a car and insure it on a learner permit, it will cost you an arm and a leg.
