so had it this morning and the tester said it failed because the bulbs were not amber enough? I asked him how he came to that conclusion. how could he determine that the indicator lights were not orange enough. They looked orange to me

fair enough i went and bought new bulbs and replaced them, but has anyone ever heard of this stuff before.

Yes, quite common. Lots of bulbs have an orange coating which cracks and peels after a while so they appear white instead of orange.
It is annoying though because its a purely subjective test.

Come on fair is fair. I'm willing to bet that when you removed the bulbs, a significant amount of the orange coating was gone meaning that the indicators were not very orange.
I figure if the indicators are in any way starting to turn white, the nct guy is within his rights to ask for new bulbs.

Imagine how much worse they'd be by the next NCT.

Back in the day you just had amber lenses and clear bulbs.

Happened to me years ago. I didn't change the bulbs. Car passed on the retest.

Look at it this way. It suggests the bulbs never needed changing. Some cars seem to always need bulbs changing. Others never need then.

That was a better way of doing it as it always falls off the bulb eventually.
