Getting the NCT .... NCT lapsed approx. 6 mths

So I insure it for sure firstly
    I apply for an NCT
Do I have to have it taxed to sit the NCT?

If stopped by the police over xmas if I have documentation to show:
    > recent car purchase
    > NCT appointment date

Will that be enough to stop them taking the car off me and getting points on my licence for no current NCT?

You'd be as well tax it while waiting for nct date..If you get stoped with no tax & test it looks bad enough..Iv been stopped loads of times with no nct but I always have tax..Some of them kick up a fuss about having no test others don't even mention it ..personally I think there more strict on tax so I'd tax it if I was you
To ans your question no you don't have to have it taxed to sit the nct

The car is a bit of a banger 1999 and may not make it through the NCT without needing repairs that are too expensive.

She is 108 per quarter to TAX but I will consider it.

Is there much of an NCT test wait time these days? I heard they are quieter coming up to xmas

You should be able to get a test within 10 days or less, particularly if your prepared to do one in the middle of the night, most are now open 24 hours. Is the car roadworthy or will it end up being seized at the side of the road for being a death trap? Are all tyres road legal and all lights working?

Before you buy it I'd get a few quotes for insurance. A lot of companies are applying hefty premiums on 15+ year cars.

you will 17 in a few days? good luck with insuring a 15 year old golf as a 17 year old learner

Insurance - That's step 1. Id never drive a car uninsured.

And as a mate of mine says ... To drink and drive, and a lot of people forget this at xmas.

    You need a car.

Just Joking, I don't drink and drive.

It walked its last NCT last year. I will make sure it has good tyres etc.

My own car died Friday and Im looking for a run around to tide me over rather than hire a car over xmas. It will take the panic out of buying.

On the subject of Death traps - I was driving a 92 golf around the carrickmines round about on Saturday (Im insured to drive other peoples cars, I had borrowed this one). Lost control of the car and slid towards the centre concrete and it looked about 8 inches high. Just managed to steer out of that and next headed for the verge. I did a huge S shaped spin, I was all over the place. Thankfully everyone was in Dundrum shopping and one car witnessed it from a distance. My mates car had L on the front and back.

Anyway I was insured to drive it but .... I later checked air pressure > on the front he had one Michelin Tyre (30 PSI) and some odd make on the other at 23 PSI.

First time I lost control of a car in 15+ year apart from a skid in the snow a few years back.

God I was lucky and skilled enough to break out of that skid, twice.

No one hit and no one hurt.

Check whether the insurance proposal form requires you to confirm that it has a valid NCT at the point of purchase. If it does, you'll have to find a different insurer.

Out of curiosity how did you manage that? Are you a named driver on specific car policies?
Afaik in order to get a 'driving other cars' extension on your own car policy you need a full licence. Likewise if the other car owner has an 'open drive' extension on their policy. As you're still only 16 you can't possibly have a full licence.

Also bear in mind that many policies specifically stipulate that you are not covered if you fail to comply with the terms of the permit , i.e. no L-plates or no supervising driver and breaching those terms means you're unlicensed and uninsured.

Im way over 16 - the car Im looking at is 1999 - Its 16 :-)

    Ive a full licence
Im fully comp / NCB 7+ years on my current car (car died Friday)
I asked the ins co Friday this question - "can I drive other peoples cars?"
    Yes, 3 party they said.

I must have picked op wrong, seems he has 15 years of driving experience. thought he meant himself and not the car in the quote

I'm considering buying it as a run around.

Presuming I can get it insured (16 years old now, 17 soon)
I have to get it NCT

Is an NCT possible with out of date tax?

The owners are friends of friends

I think you missed the part where they said they were driving 15+ years... :D

Fastest way to get NCT ? Possible hurdle?

    I buy the car.

When I call the NCT centre they will still have the old owners details right? So I wont have the authority to NCT it at all?

So I have to wait until Shannon change the ownership papers and post it back to me :-(
Or can I keep a copy of the log book and bring that?

Or I get the prev owner (friend of friend) to req an NCT date and I assume their identity on the day by getting some plastic surgery. Or getting them to call over with me to the test centre on the day.

Oops, my blooper, thought your other thread said you were 16 soon 17 but now I see you meant the car. :pac:

You can test it in the previous owners name..Not sure about copying the tax book never tryed it

On purchase of the car the log book gets posted to Shannon.
I think its a good idea to keep a copy of it.

In the test centre not having the log book wont stop the test proceeding.
But the may demand it be brought in a later date.

BUT they ask for some ID at the NCT centre but that can be anyone, I brought in my sisters car and I look nothing like her !

Anyway the quickest way to do this is to get the previous owner to NCT test request. Its too close to xmas to wait on Shannon to swap ownership.
I get a copy of the NCT request / email and bring I with me.

So you already have a policy on your current car which it seems you will be keeping, and this one will be a second car/ runabout? Did I get that right? Unless someone will do you a NCB deal, the insurance will be an arm and a leg for a second policy.

m ost Companies seem to insist on a car being NCTd I thought and will be looking sideways at a 15+ year old car

My current insured car has died, its insured to mid jan.

By runaround, I mean I will be using this old golf to see me through until I buy my next car. Otherwise I've to hire a car

I'm over 30 with fully comp and Ncb 7+ years so hopefully my ins co will be ok to swap me to this car. Will phone them today before I ever drive the car

oh well, no problem. Register the Golf in your name,Transfer your insurance to the Golf, declare the Golf SORD, Book the NCT,you can then drive it to the NCT without tax.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,643 ✭✭✭worded

    Thanks, what's SORD ?

    Statutory off road declaration.
